S600 initial high pitch whine at start
hi guys,
curious if anyone has experienced this high pitched sound coming from front of the engine in the V12TT? this sounds starts when i turn on the engine, usually in the am...and lasts for about 30 second to a minute - does anyone have thoughts? the car's covered under CPO warranty, but still curious if this was normal or not.
thx.
Patrick

My W220 did the same thing when first started.
Changed the serpentine belt and it is much less now but still there.
This sound developed in my car the last year or so, it could be something with mileage and/or pulleys and I don't think it is normal.

96 and 08 911 turbos
probably the secondary air injection.
you could try removing the serpentine belt and seeing if your noise goes away (obviously only do this for a short period of time with the car stationary)

Mercedes S55 AMG
I thought this was normal - my S55, especially in cooler weather (Below 60 degrees) will also do this for about 30 seconds. When the engine warm up, it calms down to a more consistent idle. In hot weather, it won't do it - so I think it is probably just the engine warming itself up. It happens in the morning with me, too.

Both of my V-12 TT cars (2003 S600 and 2006 S65) do this on cold start. Not sure what it is but obviously it is normal. I must admit it is a strange noise.

but it could also be the pulleys. i have a brand new idle pulley tho, so i actually dont think its that

I don't think it is the turbo's, because my S55 does it too and it's naturally aspirated. Actually I think most Mercedes I have heard do this as well, like an SL55 I heard startup, and a C280.

No, it is not the belt.
The sound is coming from the tandem pump because it's pressurizing cold hydraulic oil. Once the hydraulic oil circulates and warms up, the noise goes away.
