A Mercedes obviously!
Sounds like what I had a few months ago, no matter how many times you press it the AC OFF light won't go out. It's a bad sensor in the AC system, IIRC it's the hydroactive pressure sensor but I'll check my invoice when I get home if you like. It won't be an expensive fix. For labour and part it was $280 at the dealer.

300E a couple 1994 w124wagon E320 Wagon/,1971MGB Track/Rally, MG Midget Autocross ,2000 E320 wagon.
To confirm

the ec light on and not being able to shut it off means the ac is not on.
Usually low r134a and the sensor shuts down the compressor for protection.
If you have digital climate control see if you can run the onboard diagnostic program for the ac if your model allows it.
Otherwise any good ac shop can check for leaks and refill the system.

No, it's an 'AC OFF' light, so if the light is on the AC is not working.

You can shut off just the A/C without shutting down the rest of the heating ventilating system using the A/C "off" button. If the light remains on, your car has a malfunction.

I have the same problem on an '03 S600. The red light is on and stays on no matter what I do. I could only find instructions on how to get diagnostic on a w210 chassis. Anybody know the procedure for diagnosing through the push buttons on the climate control for the 220's?

My Issue is solved:

I was having EC light on in my 2002 C-Class so compressor stooped working...
I added gas but still light is on...
I made doaa (prayer) to allah to help me solving this problem.

Then I opened the front panel and removed the AC unit out and unplugged it from the wire harness.
Then I opened the unit itself and cleaned it by air then reconnect it again.
Then it is worked and the light goes and compressor started again...

Well, I think you probably cleaned the charcoal filter by blowing it out. Good going!

If the AC red light stays on no matter what, it is an "unrecorded " error in the software, that can be fixed.
Search my statements on this here and "there" under my nick.
