Rear Main Seal

A couple of weeks ago I noticed a couple of drops of oil in the garage. Checked a few days later nothing but basically the drops would appear ever so often so it was hard to figure where it was coming from. Sometimes I could sometimes smell a hint of oil when I got out the car. I wanted to find out where the leak was coming from so I took the car to the stealer to get a diagnosis before taking it to my indy. They informed me that the rear main seal was leaking and needed to be replaced. Since I have an Easy Care Warranty I let them make the repair and paid the $250 deductible. The bill would have been $1053 without the warranty (Parts were only 105.10 and labor $948)

I only have 53K on the clock. Anyone else experienced this repair at or below this mileage.

i've seen main seal leak lower mileage car...main-seal sometimes pop out or harden and cracked therefore wouldn't able to hold back oil..

seals crankshaft journal to engine case

requires trans removal and is arguably one of the toughest seals to replace simply based upon the work to get to it. dosent sound to me like your dealer did any stealing from you at all!

the rear main seal is what seals the end of the crankshaft against the back of the block. On some cars it also seals the upper part of the oil pan to the crank where the flexplate or flywheel bolt up.

As usual, the seal is cheap, removing the tranny to get to it is not.

rear main seals *generally* tend to leak if 1) the car doesn't get driven enough or 2) due to age of the seal itself.
