I have been trying to figure this out for YEARS

I have a 2005 E500 Sport, Airmatic, that DOES auto level at start.
A 2000 non-sport S430 w/factory xenons, Airmatic, that DOES auto level at start.
A 2001 ML320 Sport w/factory Xenons, that DOES NOT.
A 2000 non sport S500 w/factory xenons, Airmatic that DOES NOT auto level at start.
A 2007 ML350 non-sport with factory xenons, that DOES.

None of my cars have ABC.

Lets Figure This Out!

MEGA BUMP!!!

There must be a logical explanation for this. I saw on my fuses that there is a Headlamp Range Adjustment, I've already replaced that.

S320 2001, E320 2003
i had my S320 (airmatic) 2001 , do that with old headlights.
when i replace it with clear projector lamps, it doesn't. have the feature of autoleveling althought it was bosch made. then i change it to an aftermarket headliight and they got autoleveling balast/module. so yeah now i got an aftermarket headlight with original feature.

Finally!!

So now we have someone who can definitely attest that the pre-facelift reflector based xenon headlamps do in fact go up and down... when i go to the dealership, they say "oh, only projectors do that".... I wish mine would!

W163 HRA on startup

Reviving this old topic, with WIS data for W163 ML:
I have a 01 W163 ML55AMG with reflector xenon headlights. There are two version of headlights for the 01 W163, as they changed it from 01.09.2001. For both versions, WIS function description states that:

If the low beam is switched on and the key
is in position 2, the motors are referenced. The reflectors are moved to the lowest position and then, depending on the vehicle level, moved to the correct position.

On my car, this is NOT HAPPENING, so I suspect it is a malfunction somewhere.
Motors are working, as I've managed to move them through Carsoft 7.4 HRA Activation function to High and Low position. So, may be a defective control unit (N71) or one of the sensor malfunctioning (seems more plausible, as they are more exposed to dirt / tear and wear).

I attached description from WIS for both versions (reflector up to 31.08.2001 / projector as of 01.09.2001).

My 2002 S600 (with ABC) auto-levels on every start-up (quickly).
My 2009 E350 Avant garde regular suspension auto-levels on start-up, but slower.

MBZ craftsmen can and will make anything you ask for, .but you must get 'special attention.' Usually ,The Build Sheet''.(free from MBZ Cust Assst) will correctly list EVERY feature/module/system built into the car---if it was a 'standard option' and was thus 'in the system.' Unique features' CAN and WILL be included if you ask them to. But, those unique features may NOT (because there was no code available) be on the Build Sheet if the feature was truly unique and 'not in the system'
