'04 s500 known issues/problems

'04 s500 known issues/problems
I was looking for a car for my wife in the low-mid 20's range and saw an '04 s500 with about 57,000 miles, keyless go, xenon lamps, etc..(well-equipped). I was wondering if there are any issues or problems with the 04's. This was the first year the 7-speed transmission as well, right? any help would be greatly appreciated! I posted on benzworld but thought I would post here as well. thanks in advance.

Just look at the first page of thread topics in this forum:
shifter stuck in park
accelerator pedal
airmatic (or abc)
suspension clunking (ball joints)
Those are probably the 4 most common problem areas. I would skip a ABC suspension car entirely unless its under warranty that covers ABC . Airmatic is much cheaper and easier to fix. ABC was an option on s500.

Read through that Sticky on the top of the w220 page.
It has almost everything you want to know.
It can be financially difficult to own one of these cars without a solid warranty due to many of the expected and unexpexted repairs.
I am not the most experienced with the w220, but my recent exposure has led me to that conclusion.

Thanks Vabene7 & tusabes! I took it for a test drive and it seemed fine. but, I decided not to buy it. the maintenance would've been expensive for a car that's not in warranty. Plus, I would have to buy new tires for the car in about 3,000-5,000 miles. Oh well. another time.

When issues come up you hear about them more than when nothing happens. Plus you are looking online where 90% of S klass owners never go. The threads list what possible issues have been seen but not that it happens on every vehicle. I think many people get scared without a valid reason. I've owned 4 Mercedes in last 10 years and never had any major issues on any, knock on wood

I have personally had Airmatic and ball joint issues on my s430, and ABC issues on my cl500. I think its fairly safe to say you definitely will encounter these at some time if you own your S/CL long enough
