HUGE paint hood mess...help

So hey guys, i've bought my 01 s500 nearly a year ago and the paint on my hood is really messed up (i'll try to post some pics tomorrow). The paint is REALLY "cloudy/hazy" and kind of whitish/silverish on a BIG part of the hood (my car is ob black). I really don't know what the previous owner did with it but he ruined it.

I've been to a couple of body shops and they told me i needed to repaint. But a week ago i got me some quixx scratch remover for some minor scratch i had on my trunk (did not really work for those scratches, btw) and i decided to try it on the hood and it WORKED

Now this thing cost 20$+ at canadian tire for a really REALLY small bottle...so i was wondering if any other product was as good and came with more cream/wax/wtv for the same amount of money. Thx

And btw, pardon me if my grammar is bad i'm from Montreal and I usually only deal in french.

Well the clear coat looks like its totally gone? But I would try compound first, it could be just very heavy scratches in the clear. Anyways, I would try a course and then a fine compound and see if it removes the scratches. Then a glaze and a paint sealant. If that doesn't make the clear coat have a deep shine, then It most likely needs to be repainted.

tusabes: Yeah well i found the one i was talking about on ebay and got me a couple of em ( http://www.ebay.ca/itm/251134419313?...ht_4490wt_1344 )

mr_amg: i don't think it needs re painting since quixx got rid of it (the pictures makes it look worse than it's really is).

But nobody at those body shops seemed to know what could of cause this other then maybe heat from the engine...did anybody ever experienced something like that and what was it caused from?

And if it really needs painting i'll probably get rid of it and get me an 03+ til i find the right w221

Anyway i'll try quixx again on a larger part of the hood and see what happens or just get a professional to do some compound so i don't screw my paint even more.

Thanks for the replies!

I have no idea what it could be..and it's only on the hood..maybe my clear coat is failing but if that was the case i doubt i would've removed it so easily with quixx...btw do anyone know some good product to give the paint a 'wet look' ?

I run a body shop in Florida, that car my friend, is victim to a very bad paint job. Whoever painted the hood used shi**y quality clear and over time and heat from the engine the clear began to microscopically crack into tiny lines, giving it the dull look. By rubbing it out with anything is only temporarlly going to fix it. Its going to die back again and get worse. There is no way around that unless you paint it. There is nothing out there that will revive that hood I will bet anyone anything. I am so certain.

But i don't understand, the car still has it original paint...and what would be a good price to look for for repainting the hood?

weeks, it could get worse overtime by heavy cracking to a point where the shop or whoever is painting it needs to strip the entire hood of all its paint surface and start over from bare metal to be the same again. I have seen this happen before and its outcome.........not pretty........

the most you should pay on painting a black hood on a W220 is $300-350.

I don't know if that would make much of a difference price wise but mine isn't exactly black, it's obsidian black met (code 197)...and just for personal knowledge why exactly would it get worse?

I have obsidian black paint as well (197U), was wondering what the difference is between it and black other than the name?

Obsidian black comes with 'silver' flakes that gives it a kind of a metalic color...black is just black.

Check out a paint correction specialty shop if you still for whatever reason haven't been able to fix the problem. Should be a relatively cheap fix in comparison to a respray.
