Please help, electrical backwards?

We purchased a 2002 S430 online & had it transported. When it arrived the battery had to be replaced. Now the turn signals, windshield wipers, electric seals, and power windows will not work while the vehicle is running. If the key is in the on position and the vehicle is not running, everything works perfectly. In addition, when the key is in the on position, the steering wheel descends into position but when the vehicle is started the steering wheel moves up out of the way. The repo lot where the vehicle was located stated that all of the features worked properly but the car sat for a few months prior to being sold. We have disconnected and reconnected the battery and checked fuses and are still having the same problems. Would anybody have any ideas what be causing this to happen?

These are typical symptoms of weak battery.

Was the replacement battery new? Of good quality?

Measuring the voltage at the battery terminals is not conclusive.

I had the same troubles including many malfunction messages, until I bought a new OEM battery, all disappeared immediately.

Another but unlikely source of the problems could be the malfunction of one of the many SAMs.

After a battery disconnect, you have to reset all these systems.

Read the stickies here and at Benzworld.org.

Sky Law has done and outstanding job of detailing all of this information. You need to start here. https://mbworld.org/forums/s-class-w...tart-here.html

Thanks

Thank you both, I will try the resets first & try an OEM battery if that doesn't work. Will post results tomorrow.

Another possibility is an ignition switch that doesn't return to the ON position from the START position. Try starting the car, then slowly turn the ignition key back just a little at a time towards OFF and see if the problems suddenly go away.

After battery disconnect-reconnect 5 systems need to be synchronized/reset:
1. ESP
2. the express mode of the power windows (not the "normal" function)
3. the sliding/pop up roof
4. front seat head restraints
5. clock

Malfunction of turn signals, wipers, the automatic exit mode/driving mode of the steering wheel, seat controls are NOT affected by the disconnect and cannot be fixed by any "reset".

OH-NO

By the time I took the information to the mechanic, they had already pulled & ordered an anti-theft control module, which didn't work. We tried the resets which did not work either so they ordered an OEM gel battery from Mercedes. The battery come in yesterday afternoon and woo-hoo!!!everything worked but 2 error codes came up. It was too late yesterday to delve into the problem. We went out this morning & we are having the same problem that we started with and the resets are still not working. Any ideas?

You are going the wrong way about it.

Get the MB STAR system hooked up o read all codes, and reset thereafter.
This cannot be done with an ordinary OBDII code reader.

Did you ever try the thirty second (free) DIY test with the ignition switch?

After waiting a few minutes and restarting the car, everything worked fine except for the error codes. We drove the car several times that day & thought perhaps the car just needed a reset. But next morning we had the same problem, and every morning after. Let the car warm up a couple of minutes, turn off and restart & everything is roses but the error codes. Any clues as to how we can figure out why things are not working until the car warms up? The error codes are pre-save inactive, brake pad wear and SRS light (brake pads are OK but missing sensors so we ordered those, still working the other 2)
