You have to use the corect cd and a good brand of cd .. use - cd-R use Verbatin they are the best . than when u burn the cd make sure you are in audio convertion and NOT mp3 , its easy and simple

I had a similar problem with my MY 2004 when trying to play CDs burned through iTunes in both mp3 and audio format. It would show on the COMAND screen the name of the disc but just wouldn't play it. Most annoying.

This works for my 2006 S500, your mileage may vary.
MP3 DVD played in head unit, NOT CD changer.
Do NOT use any of the Windows burning programs, they just flat didn't work.
Use a third party burn prog. A nice freeby is IMGBURN ( google it ).
Use decent media, Verbatim DVD+R in my case.
MOST important, might want to write this down.. burn at no faster than 4x speed, seriously.
On mine, its a 255 folder limit, each folder has 255 MP3 limit. Again, your mileage may vary ( to say a 99 folder/file limit).
PS.. did not delete any album art, did not remove ID3 strings, just ripped em and burned em.
try it, play with it, hammer it into submission
One disc, 4.56 Gig of MP3's, loving it loudly
