Question Changing lower ball joints could blow the suspension?

Hey guys, my car has been making a squeaking noise for a while now and I knew it was the front lower ball joint so I took it to an Indy shop to get it change but that garage did not have the proper tools. So I thought paying the extra buck at the dealership was worth it because they knew what they were doing.

Once i get there, they take it in for inspection and the guy tells me that like a thought I needed a new ball joint, but he also tells me that while changing it he might blow my suspension and that would be a 3k job

So my question is, did that ever happen to any of you?

If he "blows" the suspension than he doesn't know what he is doing or he's a pervert. Stay away from that place.

I just don't understand how that could happen...he said that he'd have to hit on the ball to take it out and that there's a chance of hitting on the suspension causing it to open, and being a Mercedes dealership I guess he knows what he's doing but then again looking at some videos on how to change the ball joints i just can't see why he'd have to hit on anything.

I think they're just trying to conceal the fact that they haven't done it before and don't feel confident of dealing with any risks.

You need a particularly big and heavy tool to do W220 ball joints, but its not rocket science.

The guy I talked to has been working at that dealearship for the last 5 years and said he saw it happen like 4-5 times...I guess he's just not used to deal with the w220 models. I'm probably just gonna go visit an indy who's used with older benzes

I had my ball joints replaced at a Mercedes Dealership and it didn't seem to be rocket science. I agree with others, find another place to have them done.

Yea, that's a bunch of BS. I have done them myself on my S and never damaged anything while doing it.

Wonder what would happen if you reported such a statement to MB USA Corporate headquarters. Sounds like this guy was preparing you for a 3k bill.
