Looking to buy

Well I'm looking at a c-class for the most part as they so far seem to be very reliable in the drivetrain I'm looking at 2001-2004 ish and I'm seeing sclass from 2001 in my price range just wondering what are some problems you guys have. are they more or less reliable than a c-class and what electrical problems are common i hear the sclass has quite a few.

Look, i love my S-class and, its leaps and bounds ahead of a C-class in everyway....

With that being said, there is a price for owning it. Unless you know what you are getting into , I would buy the C-class if I were you. I have done over 15k of work in just a year keeping mines on the road. If I didn't love it, and have a glutton for punishment, I wouldn't be here.

2003 S500 - Toyota Corolla (in the rain)
2001 S Class. Check to see if the following items have failed or been replaced:
Instrument Cluster
Crankshaft Position Sensor
Gear Shift (Stuck in park)
Airmatic vs ABC (expensive to replace)

Just a few of the known problems. Having said all that I still like my S Class. It's like a living room on wheels.

So are all s class airmatics because if so thats a turn off for me i had to deal with air in my land rover and its a pain and expensive and dont care to go down that road. if they dont all have air then i would be fine with it and I'll look more into it

It's either Airmatic or ABC depending on model. Read post #10 from the Benzworld encyclopedia to get a flavor on the "S" class.

The type of owner you are will determine your experience with owning a W220 ie a DIYer or you must rely on outsiders to perform most tasks. If you can do most of the work yourself then owning a W220 can be a great experience. However, if you must rely on others, ie dealership or Indy then costs can be high.

Do as much research as possible to try and understand the potential maintenance issues on which ever model you finally choose to buy. The more you know, the less chance for disappointment later.

Good Luck,

Bob

I agree with Bob - if you are a reasonably competent DIYer, and are willing and able to treat maintenance as an enjoyable activity (well, most of the time, anyway) then you will love an S-Class. If you go to the dealer for everything, you don't want an older S-Class...

I have had 3 ML's

after driving all 2 of them from 0 to 150,000 miles and my current just at 100. I have had no problems out of all of them except 3 crankshaft positon sensors and one had a fuel pump issue, was under warranty

Most reliable car (trucks) I ever had.

If you do get a S class, Stay away from any that have ABC suspension. You go from expensive to insanity.

Mercedes
Its either airmatic or abc (hydraulic )
Airmatic is expensive to fix , abc is insanely expensive to fix
And both need service at this age /mileage

OOOOHHH , Find a 03-06 ml500. Now that's a truck I would buy right now if I were looking for another car at the moment.
