Looking to buy
With that being said, there is a price for owning it. Unless you know what you are getting into , I would buy the C-class if I were you. I have done over 15k of work in just a year keeping mines on the road. If I didn't love it, and have a glutton for punishment, I wouldn't be here.
Instrument Cluster
Crankshaft Position Sensor
Gear Shift (Stuck in park)
Airmatic vs ABC (expensive to replace)
Just a few of the known problems. Having said all that I still like my S Class. It's like a living room on wheels.

The type of owner you are will determine your experience with owning a W220 ie a DIYer or you must rely on outsiders to perform most tasks. If you can do most of the work yourself then owning a W220 can be a great experience. However, if you must rely on others, ie dealership or Indy then costs can be high.
Do as much research as possible to try and understand the potential maintenance issues on which ever model you finally choose to buy. The more you know, the less chance for disappointment later.
Good Luck,
Bob
