Limp mode On my s320 CDI

Had my vehicle over a year and half. Noticed limp mode when I first got it but on a long journey. It would be fine for upto 100 miles or so then it would activate. Cannot accelerate past 2,000 revs.
Now it is worse. On start it is perfect and until after 5 minutes of driving or so. Does smoke prior to this. Black smoke. When in limp mode does not smoke.

Any ideas how can fix.

I would suggest going to the dealer or an indy of your choice to have the car connected to a Star Machine and have the fault codes read and erased, then drive with the star diag plugged to see what codes will it replicate when driving, and what exactly causes the limp mode. Then you can share them here and we will discuss

Thanks for the reply..
I had my suspension sorted recently. He didn't tell me of any other fault codes. I'll have to get him to do it again
Will keep you posted

+1,

Besides; You may have a problem in tranny, bad conductor plate or oil sneaks to the TCU,

first, it's better if you can check if there is an oil in your TCU...

Its a 2002 and no nothing showing on the dashboard.
I hope it's not a tranny problem. It's not bothering me in the slightest apart from when overtaking on the motorway in which I cannot use the power.

Exactly.Thats why i asked if there is a warning message on dash.If it says EPC or something like that it will be engine related,if it says ESP,BAS,ABS then it must be the TCU

Then it must be engine related i think.Tranny issues with the TCU usually come with a message.Anyways you have to get it sorted - i think your fuel consumption will improve, the car will push far more better and you wont be getting the black smoke in the exhaust.

Yeah it is drinking a lot more fuel I have realised.
Something which I hope can make sense or may be nothing. When the mechanic had been sorting the suspension issue out he said the car was a killer as when it was on idle indoors the fumes were very strong. Stronger than that of any other car.

Beside of TCU or conductor plate, MAF also could be one of reason..!!

the tcu is in the front passenger footwell, take it out check for oil in it or along the wire, a common problem is the connector beacuse of leaks, and it goes up the wire to the tcu, ita a 15 fix and a couple of hours,

Open the SAM located at the right rear of the engine compartment. Look very closely at the wire harnesses inside for any traces of oily residue.

If you find any residue, follow that harness to the small black box on the end. Remove the box, open it and use brake cleaner to completely clean all of the ATF from the box and the harness.

This is likely to fix your problem for a short time ( a few weeks or months). To actually fix the problem, replace the adapter on the other end of the harness at the left rear corner of the transmission.

A few minutes of searching in the encyclopedia ("START HERE" at the top of the page is a good place to start) will give you more detailed info.

+1,

Also, did you try to change the MAF or conductor plate, usually those 2 are the most common of losing power & limp mode...
