Need help
I recently figured out how to command up and downshift control via a wireless 2 channel receiver that talks to the optic switch assembly inside the shifter of my W220. It receives signals sent from two paddles I installed in the factory steering wheel that are connected to a 2 channel transmitter behind the airbag module. As best I can tell, I am the first one to ever do this on a 220 chassis, as doing so was a challenge because the + and - detents do not activate a contact switch, but rather an optic beam is used! I can't find photos or even discussion anywhere of anyone else having done paddles on these. Instant shifts with no delay either. I'm in Las Vegas if you need help with your own car, just say the word! ![drive](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/driving.gif)

Please help me with my car to do this

Hi, all. Piggybacking on an informative thread instead of creating a new one.
I have a 2003 E55 AMG, which likely shares parts discussed in this thread.
I just bought the car and both button shifters on the steering wheel do not work as expected. However, manually shifting using the gear selector does work as expected.
Is this a known issue with a solution?
Any common places to look for the issue?
Could one button dying kill the other?
My gut says that the paddle shifters noted above (A-171-267-00-46) will fit my car. I don't want to buy them but the problem lay somewhere else in the system.
Any help will be appreciated.

I have a 03 S55 AMG with the same issue. It has been suggested that someone replaced the floor shifter assembly in the past with one that was not programmed for the paddle shift option. This supposedly cannot be programmed after the shift assembly has been used for some reason. Seems like this thread provides a solution but I dont understand what they did.

Hey, you ever figure this out???

It was as simple. If I remember correctly, all I did was pull the air bag off and disconnect and reconnect the connectors for the buttons and that was enough to get them working again. Maybe the connections were corroded?

Glad to hear it worked out for you. I am going to give that a try but my optimism is low.

Changing the shifter on a W220 is not a very practical operation. The shifter is one of the four "theft relevant" units - the EIS (Electronic Ignition System), the shifter, the key fob, and the ECU. Each of these are married to the VIN, and it is very, very difficult to find someone who can install a non-matched part. It is practical to replace all of the four theft relevant parts with a matched set from another car. This works, but leaves you with your original metal key, which doesn't match the new assemblies.
