I am having the same problem with mines as well and come to find out that I have to replace the Whole shifter cause it is a dealer item only due to they shifters are programed to that specific car only and the part runs about $1100 and it needs to be reprogrammed once its been replaced. You will have to buy a new one due to it is coded for you car only so there is no point in getting a used one. Shifter

That's partially correct. You can't just put in a used shifter . But you CAN put in a shifter , ecu , key and eis ignition switch if they are all taken from the same donor car . No programming needed . They must be a matched set of all 4 parts from the same donor car
you can find matched sets in eBay for about $350, much cheaper than just a new shifter with programming

Hello @Duncando, I have the same P1856 issue with my W220 2005 S500 4Matic. I was wondering what was your final solution? Did you buy new shifter and got it reprogrammed? or did you go with all those 4 control units from the donor car?
Please let me know.

I am experiencing the same dread P1856 issue (gear selection not detected/remedy to replace floor lever shifter) on my S55, a "pre safe inactive" warning is present on the dash. Can someone enlighten me with their solution. I contacted Beckmann Technologies and they offer a remanufactured shifter for a price much less than the dealer, however the device needs to be programmed. Looking for someone in Los Angeles that can do the programming. Any info shared is much appreciated.

Thank you for the advice option Tusabes. I may however pull the trigger on the Beckmann shifter for $425, their programming division (BlueLink) is not able to send the part pre programmed, as they (the technicians) are stating it's just a matter of VIN input and initializing on the SDS during the install - which they can walk you through the process. Hopefully this is the fix, I'll report back when completed.

It will be very interesting to see if they can really do that...
On the W220, the shifter is one of the four "theft relevant" assemblies. and it is an expensive, complex business for the dealer to change one out, and reportedly virtually impossible for a user to do so (other than, as noted above, swapping all four working assemblies from a single, suitable doner car).
If it were my car, the first thing that I would do would be to very carefully go thru the shifter and all of its connections, checking for broken wires, loose connections, etc., etc.

Happy to report I had the Beckmann Technologies shifter installed on Good Friday morning and have not experienced any issues thus far. The remanufactured shifter does include a new aluminum machined lever in lieu of the OE plastic piece in which I do notice when placing the the gear selector in park, a ever so slightly "metal click" can be heard - I'm sure my ears with get acclimated to the sound shortly. As I mentioned on my previous post above the W220 shifter part is $425, I did fail to add there is a $75 refundable core charge and shipping to Los Angeles was $40. My well-trusted Mercedes Indy shop (A&N European in Van Nuys) charged me $150 for the installation and programming. Overall cost was just a tad over $600, which is quite a bargain considering a few local indy shops were dishing out a range of $1300-1680 quotes for a new TRP part and labor. Lastly, the technician (Ray) working the phone order at Beckmann is worth noting was attentive to my questions with upbeat customer service.
