P0500 ABS Wheel Speed Sensor A error

This is quite irritating, I lost power steering, ABS, ESP, and so on, and the code the car spat out is for the speed sensor. The problem is, how do I determine which one? I don't have access to anything other than an OBDII, and someone wants to look at the car since I'm trying to sell it. Bad timing and I need to take care of it quickly. I see the part number is 2205402017, but is that the same for all 4 wheels?

I also had the passenger side coil go out on me entirely, but a new one is on order. I'm trying to sell this car in good working order, but it's fighting me on it!

I should note, I did feel the ABS pulsate slightly when braking just before the light tripped and my speedometer twitched as well. The speedometer works fine, but just when the ABS pulsed it did that.

In my looking into possible solutions, a faulty brake switch has also come up as a possibility. Could that throw that code? The two seem unrelated, but it is German.

Maybe solved, the passenger side rear sensor had a lot of gunk around it, so after removing the sensor from the hub and cleaning in it's slot and all around it, it started working again. None of the four sensors or their wiring looked to be in disrepair.

Jack,
Sorry to hear about your CL600 experience. Back in the day when I bought to the dealer on every little thing, the rear right speed sensor was the cause for the symptoms you mentioned.
You might want to disconnect all speed sensor harness and clean the corrosion off. Get Ohm readings on them to see if one is different from all others. Good luck!
Sell me your modified harmonic balancer tool if you don't have any more needs for it.

The other three looked clean and and the connections nice. The right rear I cleaned all up and reinstalled. Seems fine now, but I'll have to wait and see if symptoms return. If they do, I'll do as advised and check the ohm readings. I appreciate the input, I hope I don't need to try it!

Unless I lose another water pump, I won't need the pulley tool, I'd be happy to sell it to you.

I'm glad that it's ok now. Sounds like the right rear sensor is a common failure part. DM me for how much you want go for it and the method of payment. I don't have any leak now but I think I will need it eventually as I intended to keep two W220 and perhaps buying a CL65.

Shortly after cleaning everything around that sensor up, it occurred to me that the gunk likely came from the drain for around the gas cap. It drains right into the wheel well, right where I had that buildup. Anyone else has this issue, I highly recommend attempting to clean up that area first and see if that solves your issue.

Now the new coil is on it, and it's back to running like a thoroughbred. There's a certain satisfaction to a properly running car that needs nothing. I hope the next owner appreciates the efforts that have gone into keeping this one nice.

I got the modified puller today. Thank you. Don't throw away that failed coil pack. Should be able to get some good money for it.

My $300 deposit back. I used a rebuilt one, with apparently the upgraded components. It has a 1 year warranty, so I figured it seemed reasonable. We'll see how it goes. I'm glad the tool got there alright, I was worried it could get damaged in transit.

having very similar issues on my CL class after some recent repairs/exhaust work...ill be sure to check the rear sensor harnesses as this seems to be a common issue of them getting either wet or dirty

Thanks for posting all this info - it solved my problem today. The brake disc backing plate had rusted really badly and blistered onto the abs ring.

New backing plate and new abs ring and problem solved. All came apart really easily - even the bolts holding on the backing plate.

Disappointing that an independent had changed the ring just over a year ago...

Thanks again.

Rust blister had rubbed on abs ring

Like a Roman relic found in a field

Abs ring and wear - enough to cause a fault code
