2000 S430 for $27K good deal??

I am in the market for a larger vehicle and came across a 2000 S430 for Canadian $37,000 about US$27K with about 137,000 km about 85K miles
have taken a look at the car, test drove it, drives great
but not sure what type of inherent problem exists...

I am thinking about S classes or the LS 400/ LS 430

I really like MB, but given the quality issues in recent years, I am having concerns.. especially wtih S class

Anyone could share what are the common problems for these cars???

Much appreciated.

$27k for S430 w/ 85k mi (assuming that there no options installed and car in good condition) is sounds not bad.
Actually in US price of $27k is about average "Private Party" sale price accoring to KBB.

Yup, you are right...

The thread I mentioned before has is the one I was participating and that thread discussed some issues.

Also couple of threads in which I previously resarched E320 & used S500 might be helpfull as well:
here and here .

As far as I was able to research any "comon" problems with S-Class - there were none major once. All on vehicle-by-vehicle basis. Also it really depends how "problems" are evaluated (how suspicios you go for every little thing).
Have not found any differences in S430 vs S500 comparisson since both engines and powertrains are well made and time tested.

Try to search this forum as well as the web...

Also if you find anything - please post here...

I think the *most* common issue on the w220 S-Class would be the air-matic suspension pump (something like that) where it controls the suspension. Seen a few members with their cars sitting on the side skirts and bumpers because the pump failed. That's about the most major problem i've seen and the most common as well.

other than that, few minor things...nothing to really worry about IMO.

2000 S-Class has a whole host of problems. The major ones are:

1) failing airmatic suspension pump. I had mine replace 4 times, then got fed up and sold the darn car.

2) replace A/C compressor and parts. 2000 series had problems w/ their A/C being too weak.

3) ticking or rattling in front suspension on some cars. No dealer has yet to solve this one.

I would avoid the 2000 and look for a 2001. These cars are notoriously expensive to repair and maintain after the warranty runs out. Get extended warranty as well. Go for the more expensive exclusive warranties. They run around $2000-$2500 US dollars.

I learned this the hard way.

The MY 2000 was an introduction of W220 and especially early MY 2000 cars were "unfinished".
Most of the problems and enhancements were done by MY 2001
