W220 cluster compatibility
Hello all,
my s350 2004 cluster died A2205400447 and i bought a replacement A22005400447 80.
the dismantler who sold it did a check on my chasis number and said it would be compatible.
the new one gives me a display defective visit workshop error, does not show the milage nor the time.
does it net configuring in some way, e.g, remove/replace the batter, or is it basically incompatible.
any help appreciated
regards

Out Of Control!!

There are two clusters in miles repeat miles that will work and they are 220 540 14 47 and 220 540 04 47----when you add an 80 suffix that means the cluster is reconditioned. If you find either in a scrap yard that are good, they would not need to be coded to your car because they are already coded and compatible with your car----simply be watchful of BS artists trying to sell you something that will not work.

Plutoe
With all respect for all your work
this is only true if the cluster comes refurbished from Mercedes and coded for your car Variant specs
they are not as available as you guys think, ask MB
then, the cluster will work properly, with this I mean, when you run a DAS check. maybe from the just the driver side you might not see dash errors
Only A2205400447 is sometimes avaible as refurbished A220540044780
I am telling this because I bough a new AMG cluster from MB 6 month's ago and lived this experience
cluster worked fine plug and play but when I connected, ouch, variant all wrong ect
was a piece of cake to program but with DAS dev
and YES, do not trust what ebay seller say in terms of it will work
that also I lived with a gearbox selector
seller said he "Virginized"
it never worked to get it programmed with DAS dev, and I am not a beginner
at least he refund..
so be careful
and as this car is a UK car so I suppose you live in the UK, you will find many people with DAS
Proper install = with DAS

Led conversion
Thanks for all the advice chaps.
Had a quote to repair the broken one £150. And £250 to reprogram the 'new' one.
Since i have my old one sitting around, I think I'll have a go at adding some LEDs instead of the fluorescent tubes. Will let you know how this operation goes. Yes, this is a UK car.
Cheers

You might just try leaving the car on all night (with a battery charger hooked up to prevent battery drain ) sometimes they just needs several hours to sync up with the car

Thought you might be interested in this communication from a repairer - I hope he doesn't mind me using his words:"Thank you for writing. As you discovered, it's normally a bad idea to try a replacement cluster in the car unless it's brand new and coded by Mercedes. Otherwise fixing the original is always the way to go.

You would need to be very lucky to find a spare cluster with the same coding as your car to have all the functions work. In the early days I could replace a cluster and change the mileage provided the coding is exactly the same, but at this point in time there are hundreds of part numbers for different cluster revisions, so it's near impossible to find two the same. You can't re-code a used cluster, they are locked to the original vehicle. There are a few heavily involved methods to reset a cluster to new, but then once you paid for that you would need to pay someone else around £150 to £200 to code it for you using Mercedes XENTRY. So again, not the right path."

it reads from shifter, ecu and EIS
even if you change one of them, it goes back to the mileage the two other devices read
only 2 solutions
buy a EIS + keys, Shifter, and ECU
then you will get the mileage from the donor car in the cluster
You buy a new or viginized, or refurbished by MB, you plug it and the car's mileage wil appear
also the vin in DAS is auto set
the car's Variant Coding NOT
you have to do that manually
