Exclamation Mercedes W220 Airmatic Function or Failure?

Hello All,

I am currently in negotiation stages to buy a W220 - 2003 model with 80k miles. I am concerned as the car will lower about 2 inch after 24 hours switched off. The owner is claiming that all S-class have a feature that when the driver door is open, the car will lower for easy exit/entry....is this true? Cos i think there is a leak in the airmatic system which of course is costly to repair.

Any feedback is highly appreciated

Thanks & Regards
D.

two separate things - yes a S class will release air when the door is opened , but it’s not 2 inches and not for easy entry . If that was true it would lower instantly and not after 24 hours

If the car is lowering 2 inches after 24 hours it had a leak plain and simple

Many thanks for the reply. It is as a suspected then...so i need to reduce the price to compnesate for the repair. Owner already replaced one front air strut...probably the other one needs too.

so typically, after how many days will the car start to lower ? Or they dont?

Thanks
D.

A properly working airmatic system should hold level for weeks. A drop of a 1/4" or so is normal as it cools (air shrinks as it cools and the car lowers), but it shouldn't continue to drop overnight or over the next couple days. If you parked it for weeks and found a corner down I wouldn't be alarmed, but in theory if the system is working as designed, the valve block is closed and the struts aren't leaking, it won't drop.

Yes that is what i think so too. However although the car dropped, it still remained level. So probably the leak is not coming from the struts but from the main controller?

if it’s not just one strut that’s low , but the four corners of the entire system is in the ground , then the valve block or hoses may have a leak .
