after market head unit
I am trying to fit an Erisin android head unit to my 2000 W220 S500 but am unable to find a switchable live.I have connected it so I have to switch it on manually as it does not come on with ignition.It also causes a 1 amp drain on the battery which goes flat very quickly.

thanks Wally,unfortunately my S Class has none of the color wires everybody else has.It was specced with some crappy Nokia system that doesn't conform.Can't find the can bus feed anywhere.I'll just have to switch it on and off manually.Thanks for your help.

Hi Wally,my vin number is WDB2200752A144749.The previous owner of this car bought it new when he was 60years old and kept it for eighteen years until his death.It then stood for a year until his wife sold it to a Merc specialist who used it for a year till I bought it.Music and the rear seats weren't a priority for him so they are poorly specced.It has 117000miles and is a lovely car apart from this can bus issue with the head unit.Here's hoping. Thank you.

I'm not sure that I am reading all of this correctly, but here are my guesses...
The pins on the main connector for the radio appear to be:
pin 4 battery red/yellow stripe (always live)
pin 8 earth brown
pin 5 switched power out to antenna amp. blue This needs to remained hooked to the antenna amp and be powered when the radio is ON. There is usually a blue wire out of most radios for this. If the antenna amp isn't powered, performance will be very poor.
pin 2 OBD-II pin 3 yellow/white
pin 3 mute for telephone use
There is a "C" connector shown. pin 1 is CAN-BL, pin 2 is CAN-BH. PIN 4 is WAKE UP blue/black This goes to CD Changer - if no changer, line is tied back (dead-ended).
There is a "B" connector shown for radios without a sound system. The eight pins here are for the speakers.
My first try would be to find the connector located just behind the pull-out ash tray. This has the switched power for the cigarette lighter, the power to the light in the ash tray, and the earth. Earth is brown. Switched power should be either black/grey stripe, or grey/black stripe.

Have you considered buying a copy of WIS (Workshop Information System) online? A good version will have wiring diagrams.

I am skeptical that an auto electrician would be the best way forward - It seems to me that you will be paying for his training. I seriously doubt that you will find an electrician who is actually familiar with the W220 wiring, or who has the wiring diagrams available.Sorry that I couldn't help more, and good luck with your project...
