W220 Safety

Is there any information on the safety of the w220 chassis of cars?

Other drivers are especially bad on the road right now, and that has me thinking about safety a bit more. It's a bit hard to find information on the safety of the W220 chassis other than saying "it's a safe car, it's an S-Class". Maybe a bit more detailed than that, but not much.

Yeah I've seen those videos... it doesn't really tell you much in terms of safety like.... at all.

The W220 was designed for the safety if its passengers, not for the survival of structure itself.
The systems design ( now over 20 years old was the ultimate at that time, and still pretty good today.)
Some newer cars are just now coming near to achieving that standard.

It was one of the safer vehicles on the road as measured by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety from 2000-2003.
The 1999-2002 S-Class had a death rate of 25 which was in the top 10. The average vehicle of that era had a death rate of 87.

Safety is something I won't simply take Mercedes by their word at.

I'm not sure if we can assume that S-class drivers are usually in a hurry 😋

I do like how the S-class is listed as very large

That chart is also probably mostly the W140 chassis which is generally considered quite safe because it saved princess Diana's driver
