cd changer magazine wont come out feels soft and moves

my s class 2002 cd changer is having problems, the system says no cd's in the changer, so when i try to take out the magazine , it doesnt work unless i move the angle of the thing inside a bit . it seems soft to me and moves around a bit when it did not do this before as far as i can remember?
could a bump or jolt cause this? can anyone help out?

Yup - Just brought my vehicle in the 2nd time for this, MB could not get me a CD player replacement (refurbished, I'm sure) right away - indefinite backorder.
How'd you get the jammed magazine out? If MB sends out the unit they say it's 4-6 weeks until your CDs are mailed back, and then you probably end up with Britney Spears or Cher Live...

MB S550 now; S63, CL600, S430 previously
I had the same problem on my '01 S430 last spring. I could neither play the cd's in the cartridge nor remove the cartridge. The problem occurred about a couple of weeks before I traded it on another vehicle. I left the problem for the dealership to work out and told them to keep the cd's. I have no idea how they got the cartridge out.

I'm curious to know how and why this happened so that I can avoid the problem in my current car.

In my understanding there are several different models of a changer (all of them Alpine brand), however worst one made in China. Such problem happens with my changer once in year, so I need to disconnect it, disassemble, pull cartridge, and all return back. Annoying problem indeed. Since I bought my changer from ebay I have no luck involve a dealer to fix.

Do a technical tap

This has been hapenning to me quite often. All I do is just keep trying and it will eventually eject the cartridge. Also, if it does not give willing le, i tap on the cartridge. ( Believe me it works)

magazine empty error...

I recently got a "magazine empty" error. I tried several different discs but still no luck. I am able to take the magazine out with no problems. Any solution for this problem? thanks.

I have a similar problem with my 2000 S430. I can play music for some time but then it stops and displays a "magazine empty" message. Does anybody have a solution for this problem? I went to the dealer to find out how much a new CD changer would set me back they are looking for about $500.00. Please Help!!!!!!!!!

The MB changers of this vintage are notoriously imprecise interms of magazine
to changer fit and may bind when attempting to eject. Some prodding is needed.
I think I use finger tip pressure to find the sweet spot to press while pushing
the eject button. Only happens with one of my magazines, the others are
okay.

Insofar as the 'soft' feel, it could be a result of the internals mounted on
rubber donuts. This helps cushion and dampens the road shock. I opened
a DOA changer up few months back (MC 3198) to try to better understand
why MC 3010 and 3198 were so problematical in their performance. I didn't
gain much insight, though I did note the shock absorbers located on each
side...at least 4 of them.

Got mine working...

I wanted to see what model I have and I was curious why it wasn't ejecting or playing. So I took it all apart. The only thing I found out that 1 of the donuts was not in place and the other was unalligned. So I reseated it all in place but I really don't know if that was the problem but when I put it all back together. I had to give it a love tap about 3-4 times then eject button and it worked. Eject is fine and now it plays....it now even plays MP3's....j/k

if yours is mounted in traditional spot, it should be left rear of trunk, inside
the stowaway well.

lift trunk floor liner and look for couple of sheet metal screws. remove.

CAREFULLY lift changer and mount and place on trunk floor. DO NOT KINK
the orange fiber harness.

reach around to the rear of changer and remove the 1) small black power
plug 2) larger, postage stamp size fiber plug

the changer can now be removed from the mount and examined.

DONT KINK THE ORANGE FIBER harness in any way. it'll prob cost you over
$100 to replace it. the labor alone might dbl that

Wink Just bought new cd player

as I bought mine with it removed. found the small plug for the power as suggested in this post but can't find the postage size fiber connector. I see plenty of fiber cable but no connector. Would anyone remove this as well, or where should I look to find it?. Thanks for any advice.

S class, your year....*should* be in left rear of trunk. Carefully pry open
trunk liner and use flashlight to look for bright orange fiber harness, twin
lead. It will probably be zip tied with other bundled electrical wires up
alongside the metal fender. Presuming, of course, that your car is USA
issue. I understand that it may not be preinstalled if non-US.

CORRECTION: the orange, fiber leads will probably NOT be zip tied. i
was tired when I typed. the black, power lead will be zip tied with other
electrical harnesses, whereas the FIBER leads will be dangling loose. left
loose to prevent damage. handle the fiber harness with care (!)

Thank you. I do see the cable tied fiber cable, I just was unable to find an end. Seems every one is attached to another. I see the input to the amp, output to a small module under the player which seems to be tie strapped under the amp etc. Tomorrow I will climb in the trunk with my drop light instead of my flashlight.
Traded my 2000 vet in on this car so all is different. This has 58k miles and is a pleasure to drive. I was just getting used to working on the vet and now a new challenge.....

The fiber harness should be direct from head unit and unconnected and
near other electrical bundle. Once you see it, just follow it and feel for
the postage size terminated plug just dangling for your delight.

Snake the fiber down towards the location of the CD changer.

DO NOT KINK or otherwise damage the fiber harness. If you do, it'll be a
beach to fix. Dealer labor will probably cost more than the replacement
wiring.

The other fiber out of the amp is probably used for phone

changer MC3010....

I really appreciate the help. I actually climbed in the trunk today and removed the bracket amp and all assiciated parts. Still did not see the connector. Now that I know it comes from the head unit it makes sense. I was looking for a vacant plug receptical to indicate maybe the last guy took the harness with the unit. I'll take it out again and look up in around where the harnesses come into the rear fenderwall area...Now I'm again motivated.

Don't be to worried if you don't find one as some cars did'nt have them fitted. I had to run my own from the head unit to the changer as there wasn't one in my car. The original owner never chose the cd changer option when he ordered the car from Germany.

FINALLY GOT IT !!! It turns out that under the chasis for the cd changer mount was a black box that looks like an RF filter or something. It had two harnesses connected to it. One was about a 12 wire connector and the other end had the missing cd fiber connector plugged into it. Turns out where it was mounted was a holding spot for the fiber connector but was not wired to anything inside the box. Sound is great, hopefully I can help others someday on this and other issues.
