Earliest date for 4-matic for S Class?

Any chance one could pick up a 4-matic S-Class at the factory on European delivery August 1, 2002? Will the 4-matic be equally available on all S Class models or will it first be available on one and then phased in on others?

Cool S Class 4 Matic

4matic will be available on S430's and S500s only...not on the S55AMG nor the S600.

The 4matic will be availalbe in September/October in Toronto, Canada, but I don't know about earlier europian delivery dates. You should ask your local MB dealer to investigate.

is 4matic really needed

Since I live in Toronto Canada, and the 4matic would justify my purhcase of an S430 cause I would not require a 4X4, its definately worth the extra 4 grand.

My old 300Se (1992) was a great car, but very big and boaty. I sold it for a new 911. The mercedes are reputed not to be the greatest winter cars. Rear wheel drive....go figure...I am looking forward to the all wheel drive. My 300Se was horrible, even with winter tires.

Hmmm...maybe they will phase the 430 engine out? I mean I understand phasing it out of the M & E, because they want a more powerful engine...but in the S the they already have a 500.

carry over

I believe MarcusBenz who works for a Mercedes Dealer in Orange County speculated that Mercedes would probably hold off making any major engine changes on the S Class until the completely new body style comes out in two or three years. That would suggest that the 430 will continue as a carryover at least for the 2003 model year. Assume this could be confirmed easilly by anyone at a dealership responsible for putting in orders for 2003 inventory since the Rubicon for 2003 orders would likely be crossed within the next 30 days.
