My S500: From Dubs to Nineteens?

As some of you may already know, I've had 20" Chrome lowenharts on my car for a little over a year now. The problem is recently I drove over a chunk of asphalt on the highway which put a bend on the inside of my rim the side of a basketball player's fist. In addition to that rim, I have another with a minor bend at near the face of the rim on the outside. In addition to THAT, two of my wheels have chrome chipping/peeling/pitts on the lips of the rims. I found a set of 19" rims which I like but I'm just not sure about the downgrade from 20's to 19's. The Tire size will be 245/35 rather than 255/35 so it's not like the ride will be any different, but I'm concernec about whether there would be a noticeable difference. Anyone have any pics of a 220 on 19s or can share their opinions?

Try driving around Santa Barbara, CA. I swear most...

Places here are like driving around the Old West, they don't fix pot holes they just heap piles of asphalt on top making a Pitchers Mound! I hate our roads.

I say go for it. Get something with a nice lip, something elegant and classy and it'll look 100x better then anything with chrome.

19's look too small on an S-Class, you should see Erick Tu's early pics of his 19" Lorinser LM-5's, and the big difference when he put the 20" versions on his car. The difference in quality of ride will of course be better with the 19's, but it would look kinda small to me. You gotta watch out for them pesky potholes in NY, why is it only in NY/NJ where you can find the world's worst potholes? *sigh* I need to move!

since the w220 is a big heavy car. would be better to go with a bigger side wall.

I just bought rim and worrying about going low profile in the 35 series range.
So I will order 245/40/19 and 255/40/19 for tires.
This size will give similar overall diameter and an OK size wall height in 40 series.

I can't seem to find eriktu's earlier pics but Im surprised that one inch in the rim size determines a good/bad look on the S class. To each his own, but I guess I WANT to believe that 19's would be ok on the S. Plus the fact that it seems like a good deal is provoking me, but I'm still undecided. Btw the rims are 19" chrome lowenhart ld1's with nitto nt555 tires.

thats the way to go fong Armani damaged his amazing rims in the first palce because he went too low on the profile of the tires always leave some cushion for the roads pushing ;-) there are pot holes all over the world you cant avoid them all

yeah other places in the world may have potholes, but NY's potholes look like sinkholes and craters that look like a UFO was just parked there

srry about that i couldnt see that armani was kidding it just confused me i thought that he might be kidding but he was too sarcastic haha he got me...well if NYC potholes are that bad i wouldnt recommend going very low profile on the tires 40...even 45 arent bad still look good not as good as a 35 but then 40 or 45 dont damage your $8000 rims either :-)

whatsup armani

man if you change rims... keep the dubs. my first pair of rims for my w220 were 19s LM-5s. Everytime i looked at them, i wish they were bigger. I ended up wasting money selling the LM5s for cheaper and buying 20s lol. The first picture is the 19s. Following pictures 20s.

why not just get your 20s repaired and just try to drive a little more carefully and slower when you are on roads that you're not familiar with?

It wasn't a road I was not familiar with. It's the same highway that I drive to and from about 5-6 days a week. You seemed to have missed the part where I said there was a chunk of asphalt the size of a football on the road. Albeit I was on the phone while driving...but still.

Hey Armani, I have the same wheels that you do and they bend very easily. I have a technician here in Miami that repairs the inner part of the wheel for $85. Turn around time can be a little as 48 hours. Repairing the outer is much more complicated. It has to be stripped, repaired and re-chromed. That adds $225 and takes at least a week. I've had all four of my wheels repaired twice this year.

thanks for the advice. yea one of my other rims has a slight bend on the in and outter lip, might be causing the air to leak out. atleast 2 other rims' lips are either cracked/peeling/chipping/pitted. considering our rim is a 3 pc, do you happen to know what I should pay to have each lip rechromed? thanks esntrk!

p.s. i've decided to pass up on the offer but if anyone needs chrome 19" lowenhart ld1 rims and nitto nt555 tires for $1100 I can tell you who to contact.

p.p.s. believe it or not I'm taking a liking to the porsche cayenne. i was thinking of maybe getting a black one with chrome 22's since I hate having an outdated car and the 221 would be more than what I want to spend. I photoshopped a pic of what rim I'd like for the truck...
