Mercedes
I saw it driving around when I was in Las Vegas, probably for hot weather testing. I only saw it for 5 seconds because it was turning, but it's beautiful!

Looks nice from the outside, but the interior looks really like the 7 series.

Where to Find the New S Now

What does the designation "Werkswagen" on the right side of the trunk lid signify?

To answer the above question about locating one in Germany now, just sign up for a factory tour at the Sindelfingen plant outside of Stuttgart. They are piling up all over the place there and being tested on the plant test track regularly since the S is now in full production mode and Mercedes is trying to have two available for each dealer in Europe by the planned launch date in September.

Below is a link to one I saw when at the factory in Sindelfingen recently:

If it does not set records though it will probably be because of the economy and desire to keep a lower public profile on the part of world executives in these troubled times. There is already a pent up demand for the new S as many purchasers (who already have the older versions) have been holding off waiting for the new S. Also there is a lot of built in profit in a top of the line mass produced model so creative marketing can be used to move them in the slower periods, unlike the Smart which had hardly any profit margin to begin with in the first place. Sales in the US should do just fine though if Mercedes can continue to convince US buyers that quality control and superior service are priorities at least for the S model. As far as styling, IMHO Mercedes made the correct move to make a break from tradition and give the new S a sportier look including the controversial flared fenders.

My guess is that "Werkswagen" means "factory car" so the first posted photos on this thread may not be exactly what will hit the showrooms in September -especially details like the depicted wheels.

Sporty flares? More like retarded to me. I have lots of friends that are S customers and no one is chomping at the bit for the new one.The CLS style is the direction the S class should have took if it was wanting to be sporty. Adding love handles doesnt do anything but make it look bloated.
Most have went with a 7 series or something else. I am not a BMW fan but the 7 series is a much better looking car .
The new S will sell like hotcakes the first two months, all the Lemmings will line up to take delivery. After the newness wears off I predict poor sales.

Mercedes all the way!
detractors note: (i've said this several times so apologise to those who've read this before) the W220 was also received with very mixed reactions, but has gone on to sell extremely well. in fact, when it was launched i was one of the biggest detractors. now i drive one -- i think it's very beautiful, and that says it all, really.

those flares are controversial, sure. but if you wanted very standard, safe, business-like styling, you should be looking for Audi, not Merc. personally i think they look great -- the CLS has too much of an expanse of "unbroken" sheetmetal below the shoulder kink, IMO. the flares should help solve that. i'll reserve judgment until i see the real thing.

actually, the 7 provides a pretty good benchmark. sure, many were horrified by the looks, but that didn't seem to impact sales much. the sad truth is most people would buy whatever is new, and that manages to capture everyone else's attention. peer pressure, methinks (though i've no research to back this up, of course. just observation)

Ya like someone else said, the interior looks almost identical to not only the 7-series but also the 645. The interior is just so plain. I also hate the way the luck-unlock buttons are on the door. I think that is so cheesy. The new CLK are like that too.

As for the exterior, the front looks soo similar to the Lexus SC430 and new Lexus GS. (more like the SC430 IMO). I like the back though, at least something on this car is unique.

I do like this car more than the current model though. I have to admit the new facelift on the '05s did make the car look very appealing but i never like the 2000+ model. The previous model which my dad owned look so gangster and mean. This current model looked like a p*ssy. All the new benz's are begining to look much more feminine. CLS is still very baller. I really hope they dont screw up the new CL.

Thanks for that!!
Some negative comments I dug up on the CLS before it was released.
Course we know it went on to be crowned one of the most beautiful Benz designs of all time.

I disagree

I think its like the SL the perfect blend of masculinity and femininity

wow the actual pictures look kinda....UMMMMMM....

Still cannot make myself like it..... the back just reminds me about civic coupe

the shape reminds me of the current x-type jaguar... not sure if I like the look of the cls

Heck, W220 and CLS, I can dig up comments about the W140 and W126, including the comparison to a "plebian" brand of car ("it looks like a Volvo"). I remember being absolutely replused by the shape of the CLS when it was first shown, but now I'm a pretty big fan... and this S as well. I think this car will be a hit.

i think it looks nice. I would like it even more if you could retrofit the old steering wheel, and replace that analog clock with a read out clock. Also i wish it still had a gear shifter... actually nm, i hate it now

Yes : "der Werkswagen" is factory car, mostly used for presentations.
You can then buy them : http://www.autoscout24.de/home/index...id=zwe1ai4bo2d

Every MB I have owned (since early 70's) has had a analog clock. I don't think they will ever use a digital readout as the primary "clock" in their cars. My new R will have a analog in the dash as does my current E320.
