What made a Bentley a "Bentley" was heft, workmanship, price, and presence, and this VW Bentley has none of those IMHO. I'd take an S class and bank the other $60K... or if I really liked the underpinings of this car,
then an A8L with a W12.

In fact after driving the CGT and seeing the Spur in person, I was NOT impressed. I went down to my local Mercedes dealer and placed a deposit on the CLS55. The bentley was not worth the extra $70k. Shoot, one cannot even get satellite radio in the Bentley. I was not certain of the long term dependability of the Bentley nor the resale value.
The MB is as quick if not quicker. The engine has a long standing dependability record and IMHO, the Mercedes has more sex appeal. One bentley CGT owner made the statement that his neighbor asked him if he liked his new DODGE!

The G500 would get owned by a grand cherokee in Off Roading this is a fact. A Ford or Chevy truck is not a good platform for off roading, sand duning but not off roading. See those trucks have very long beds which become a ***** to navigate up on a trail, and make it hard with clearence. The Grand Cherokee is nothing like you Volvo XC90, Grand Cherokee not cherokee, although a cherokee is a good off roader too, which is why alot of national park services use these vehicles.

-M1A1
-H1
-Gelandewagen (Bundeswehr G500)
-Chevy 2500 (US Army)
-Chevy Blazer (US Army)
so yes.. I've had some "Experience" with off road.
The M1A1 was king (of course).. followed by H1, etc.. but I would say all of those would "Own" a Jeep Grand Cherokee.. why??
Repeat after me kids "u-na-bo-dy" yup.. that's right, unibody.. this is a type of chassis that is INFERIOR to solid frame when it coms to "rugged" vehicles.. and WHY, a Jeep Grand Cherokee is NOT in the same league as the vehicles mentioned above.

Just to be clear.. the "new" Bentley is a GREAT car, better than 99.9% of cars out there, and certainly nicer than the Audi and VW it's loosely based on, BUT it's not the same as the old Bentley, that's all.
I even noticed that the legendary front grill of the "new" bentley (a trademark of the car, mind you) is now plastic chrome, where as the original Continental's that ended production in 2002 were solid chrome! There is (an example of) how you shave off $200,000 form a car's price.

A Chevy Silverado 1500 would get owned by a Grand Cherokee on a trail.
Also why are we talking about a completely different G-Class, we were talking Stock US G-500, not some Ex Military G wagen. If you wanna do that, then we could say a Rubicon with a full lift system and winch.

Only different in that a G-500 has luxury interior... chassis is identical and suspension is better on G500 than the older G wagon... PLUS today's G55 drive trane is far more powerful. Though the Diesel engine would rule the roost for 4x4.
as for Silvarado 1500.. screw that $15,000 piece of crap... how about a 2500 4x4 Diesel... that would eat and poop out a Jeep in no time. Do your research on how many Jeeps broke their unibody while off roading, and on how Land Rover used them for marketing when comparing their Discovery (a better off roader) with it.

Mercedes all the way!
btw, this is long overdue - haven't been in this thread for some time - but yes you're right, zam2000, regds Avalon - i mixed it up with the Aristo. i know the american avalon is a different car - hence i said Avalon (JDM) - (japan domestic model). sorry for the mix up. still, it doesn't change my point at all.
as for the engine et al - there's a reason the SLR wears the Merc badge, no? you won't see the chrysler engine in the Merc. that's the gist of what's been said in this thread by those unimpressed with the Flying Spur. the Maybach was conceived as a Merc - and i've criticised it often enough for being too similar to the S-class - so i agree with you on that. i DO say the Maybach is a big, impressive, W220.
anyway, the S interior isn't too shabby at all - check out the detailing - especially if we're discussing the 500 or 600 - and i won't see something i recognise from a VW or a Skoda
(or from Smart, as might be more appropriate in this case):

as for the S v. Bentley
The Bentley is fairly compared to an S65 (but we don't even know if they're going to have one for '07) so we'll have to wait and see what they give us, and I'll hold judgement until then..
but the new Bentley is still a shadow of it's parents and grandparents.

Eh, depends on what kind of off roading.
We (friends and I) never take FIed cars unless they are tuned specifically for off road use because of the lag from turbos, and the lack of availability of superchargers on trucks that we use.
Anyways, doesn't matter if you have a GWag or a Rubicon, in the end it's about what you know. So I don't think it's that accurate of a analogy vs a compro of the S-Class vs Bentley.
Either way though, I'm down with the LS430

My girlfriend's parents have just added another to their stock, so now they have a total of 5 Bentley's. An 01 Contiental GT, an 05 Arnage, two 05 GT's (one black and one green) and the most recent one is the Flying Spur. They are happy with it and honestly, one really can't compare the S class to the Flying Spur. As much as I love Mercedes, I have to say that I'd take a Bentley any day.

Bentley vs Sklasse pricing
Just a minor point on pricing. Yes, the base S600 will be about 70K less than the base Conti FS; however they will not be the same spec, to make them level the merc would have to be loaded with options and Designo interior materials/exterior paint. By then the price difference will be gone
