S550 Launch Edition "Novelty" Question

Hi,

I'm new here, but I have a question about the 2007 S550 Launch Edition I got a few months ago. I love the car to death, and love driving it around, but when I showed it to my father a week ago, he said not to drive it because it will appreciate because of the fact that it is a Launch Edition.

Is this true?

I assumed that being a LE meant it had a specific package that came attached to the basic car but not that it was a collector's item.

I hate to let a car like this sit in the garage in hopes of appreciation (I mean, it's not like it's an Enzo or a '62 Ferrari 250GT) so I want to see if I can get some clarification in the matter.

Thank you.

The value of the car will go down over the years even if it has no miles...so just drive it because at the end of the day thats what you bought it for

It might take 25 years before you get your money back. Drive the car, tell dad to jump in and go for a ride.

Seriously its a Mercedes...........drive it in good health and leave the speculating to collectors, or buy another S-class and lock this one in a bubble for 20 years!

dude,

from what i've been told, resale value on a mercedes will not increase because of a launch edition, designio, or amg sports package it came with. its a good gimick to charge you more at the onset but after you drive it off the lot it is no special car than any other s550. unless you have a SLR McLaren drive it, enjoy it, since your paying insurance and you bought it to drive.

You are right on the launch edition and Designo; the AMG package actually adds a bit in value and cars with AMG packages sell much easier.

Either way, every response so far has been right on. Cars are purchased to be driven. They will loose their value anyway, might as well enjoy it...

Thanks guys. He had me really going that I should not drive the car but now I won't have qualms about it because I know I could never make my money back.

What really confused me though is how the dealer here bragged about the car being a Launch Edition and that 1000 were being produced in an exclusive Designo package. I mean, my father was right in saying that if I had 1 in 1000 it could be a collector's item, but really what's so special about it?

Plus I searched everywhere and I can't find anything that says Launch Edition or #/1000 anywhere. What's the hype albeit the color package and wheels?

yes it is 1 in 1000, you could probably sell it now for MSRP but down the road in like a year it will definitely depreciate the same as the other S-classes.

Here's what confuses me about this thread. How do a father and son who don't understand that modern mass-production cars are NOT financial investments manage to afford $300k worth of cars? No offense.

Well, actually, that might be offensive, but whatever, I'm still curious.

There may only be 1000 LE's, but what's different about an LE, the color of the leather???? Who cares?!?!? Now if MB only ever made 1000 W221 S-class period, then it might be a different story. But obviously, that's not the case here. Even if it was, I doubt it would be a very lucrative investment. I wonder if even a Maybach would appreciate in the next 30 years.

I'll admit, I don't understand that modern mass-produced cars are not financial investments, and frankly I don't care to understand. My father though, is an Indian immigrant who really doesn't know much about cars at all. I told him that tidbit of information and when someone typically hears 1 out of 1000, they assume it has some value to it. No need to bash him. That I take offense to.

I merely asked a question which was on my mind and everyone (albeit you) that posted on this thread were kind enough to just give me an answer.

What I'm curious about is why do you have to go onto a thread that just asks a question and bash the person asking?

I didn't post to bash. Frankly, I was perplexed by your post.

What surprises me is your attitude "I don't care to know [that they are not financial instruments]". Let's face it, unless you're lying in your profile, S550+G55AMG+H2=a lot of money. Which either you or your father made, I assume. It's unusual for someone who has been that financially successful to be that blase, even dismissive, about understanding financial matters. Maybe you won the lottery, I don't know.

I don't see what your father being an Indian immigrant has to do with anything. Some of the most financially savvy car aficianados in California (and in these forums) are Indian immigrants or children of Indian immigrants.
