Old man's car?
Most of the customers who came along (10 or so) were retired businessmen. Is the S-Class an old man's car? I drive a BMW M5 and my wife has an E500 wagon. I thought my next car might be an S-Class but now I'm thinking I should wait until my hair is greyer.
Here's a pic I took along the way today. We travelled about 200km and had lunch along the way courtesy of the dealer.
The cars felt quiet and smooth, but I'm more of an AMG type I've decided.
The S all the way in the back looks wicked!

It is true that normally you achieve that kind of success in your later years. That was then this is now. The S to me is still a great car and who cares if only "older guys own it" I get a kick out of the looks I get by the older guys when they see me a 31yr old get out of a 100,000 car (CLS55).
There will always be people to think that it is still an old mans car, like my wife but if we buy these cars thinking of what everyone else is going to think than you are ignoring your feelings.
Bottom line get what you like who cares what people think. I've seen some great looking S550 with rims that no way looks like and old mans car.
Good luck!

So what?
Get the car for you that you want. Not the car that someone else wants.
Most of the owners of these cars are "old" after all ,aren't they?

"Golly, and I thought my Hudson Commodore 8 had some 23 Skidoo." was the comment I believe said most.
Serious on the first line, kidding on the last of course.
I don't think it's an old man's car - but you can definately do your best to shake any hint of that by getting big wheels and tinting the windows, that's what I did (although now I look like a drug dealer... take your pick I guess)
In the end of the day get the car you appreciate the most, regardless of what people think. The S class is an amazing car, I think it sends out more of a "success" vibe than "old", but often success requires age so that's why there's any confusion.
Go ahead, get the S class and enjoy it

It's okay to admit it, in fact I'm impressed. That's a feat of mechanical engineering and ingenuity.
