Question to All W221 Owners

When the new models first launched (W221), was there any wait time/need of a reservation - or were the cars readily available?

Also, for any who may of had a wait time, how long was the wait?

There was a waiting list at most dealers for custom builds (which there still is) but MB did fill the chain fast with cars with fewer options. I purchased a custom order build which another customer could not take delivery on but had most of what I wanted. Took delivery in about a week from seeing it.

Nevada Jack - The AMG kit doesn't count as a "custom order build" does it? So they were quite readily available, unless you wanted a very customized option.

The S550 came first right? Or did the S600 come at the same time?

The AMG kit is an optional custom order build per car. It was one of my requirements and there were few available with as many other options that were on my list of needs. ABC and P2 components were hard to get as well as multi-contour seats.

Oh wow, I thought they had some with the AMG kit and some without; but that makes sense because I see quite a few S600 w/ AMG Body-Kits (I guess that's dealer installed). I'm assuming this is a very expensive option -- ?? But then again, I thinking of it as buying the individual parts.

The AMG kit is a $5600 option and includes the full body trim and the 19" wheels and tires. No AMG badge included...:-)

$5,600 Whew! Well I'm sure it's not a lot for S-Class owners, but that's a pretty penny. Although looking at your car, it's worth every penny.

lol, yeah, no AMG Badge... that's okay, I'm sure the "S550" in the rear will do!

Custom ordering a car from the factory is an interesting process!! So many things to choose from.

I can't even imagine what it would be like to spec out a Maybach. I can't even imagine how long that'd take.

I ordered in January and took delivery in September - 8 months.

Apparently the holdup on my car was P3, specifically Night View Assist, so you might be okay without that option. I also have AMG but as far as I know there's no backorder on that.

I ordered mine in September. I was informed a few days ago, that the promised delivery date of December would not be met because of a "critical option 432." ( I believe that is the dynamic seating.) Assuming I will now have to wait until January.
Great exercise in patience, not exactly my forte!

Yeah but it's worth the wait. Now that I have my P3 S550 I'm really glad I waited it out. It's totally worth the extra options. The dynamic seats are especially cool - hold out for them!

Does that mean there are other cool things you can get besides typically available options if you custom order, or are you still limited to only US optional equipment?

Maybach also proudly states that between all the options and colors, there are over 2,000,000 differernt configurations for the Maybach.

I was told that Mercedes was having problems with suppliers for both the Night View Assist and the Panorama roof. Since the S600 has all of this standard, most of this equipment was allocated for these models. In fact right now on the Build Your Own S550 page, Premium Package 3 is grayed out and it says delayed availability.

Way back in January my dealer was able to order the P3 options separately and the price came out the same so I did that. However, now you can't get them at all, at least for now.

What you said about the S600 was correct - MB grossly underestimated the number of S600 orders they expected and that resulted in S550 orders getting delayed and cancelled due to an optional equipment shortage. In fact, they were amazed that my order didn't get cancelled; if you order an S550 today with P3 options or Panorama Roof and someone orders an S600 next week, your S550 order will get cancelled so the S600 can get built. In fact they don't know how I even got my car at all, other than the possibility of someone in Germany making a mistake and giving it the green flag.

S600 in Germany/Switzerland: both features are not standard and are optional to order.

Thats too bad, I kind of like the idea of the S600 having everything standard. Although, I think the Panorama should be an option given that it drastically changes the appearance of the car.

That's interesting...I wonder why. They are both standard on mine. I would assume there is a considerable reductioin in price vs the US model.

Think again. US Mercedes are bargains.
