S550 air conditioning
I had a '95 S500, and sometimes the air conditioning was not able to cool down the car on 100 degree days. I had a friend who also had a W140 car who reported the same thing. Fast forward to the 2005 S500--I test drove one on a hot summer day and noticed the same problem. My question is this: are those of you who drive the S550 in Arizona satisfied with the performance of the air conditioning?

The air conditioner in the S550 will cool you down like a fridge. NevadaJack, who lives in Las Vegas has mentioned before that the S550 is leaps and bounds ahead of any previous S class.

I think one of the main reasons for the poor performance of past systems is the fact that they have a bagillion vents to blow air out of, and not enough blowers, or not powerful enough ones.

Sounds good! The a/c was the only performance issue I had with that car--I really enjoyed driving it. When I was ready for a new car in 2000 I didn't consider the new S500 because they had shrunk the car and, it seemed to me, cheapened it. But now I am getting excited about the S550.

Yes, very much so. I'm in Phoenix and the air conditioning on my W220 was inadequate, frustrating, and made me miss my old Lincoln Town Car. The new S550 is a different story though - the a/c is awesome!!!
On top of that I had limo tint in the W220 and no tint in the S550. That says a lot about the a/c.

The infrared glass which also have UV ray coating, also seems to help block a lot of the heat from outside. Overall, Mercedes has addressed this issue and fixed it beyond anyones beliefs IMO. Even in Orange County, when the weather gets hot it is a rare sight that we will drop the temp all the way down to cool the car. The same could not be said about the W220.

The thermotronic is brilliant. Peak summer in Australia can have temps above 40 degrees celsius and the a/c has no trouble in cooling and maintaing in cabin temperature. Use this in conjunction with the seat ventillation and you're sure to stay cool and comfortable!!!!

The AC in the W220 sucks. So many vents yet so little blowing power. The infrared glass seems to also keep that heat blocked inside. Hope you all are right about this problem being solved. Thats the one thing I hate about my S500.
