"Night Vision" on the 2008 S600

This is really a great idea. The infrared really lightens the space in front.

It's fun at first and its cool to show your friends but man it gets distracting. I try to use it on really dark roads sometimes. It works really great lighting up and zooming in on the dark road.

I believe night vision picks up cop cars idling by the road side though in a civilized country like yours cops have better things to do.

After one year in use I do not see any real advantage for the night vision. I would not order it anymore.

I believe the general opinion would be the same. Its a really amazing novelty - very cool to show friends - very cool to use once in a while.

However - unless you live in an area like the country (with few if any lights in the mountains) - you simply don't NEED this feature.

Do I wish I had it on my car? Honestly? Yes! Because, like any novelty, I want what I don't have. Would I use it a lot? Probably for the first month! After that - just like every novelty, gadget, toy, etc that I bought in my life - after a month - its not going to be as interesting.

Curiously I find a mismatch between the usability of night vision and the driving locations for which it is best suited... Generally I cannot see much more than I would in the illuminated projection area of my headlight beams... it is however useful in illuminating the dark areas outside those beams... In my area there are a lot of steep hills (and deer) and with headlights on dip, night vision definitely does open up what I can see - especially when driving uphill. I find it pretty easy to switch back and forth between the night vision and the windshield view, but there is not enough spatial information in the night vision screen to allow it to substitute for your windshield view for more than a few seconds...

...so I find night vision is most useful on dark and hilly/windy roads, and yet because of the limited ergonomic factors such as lack of peripheral vision and depth perception... and the need to keep ones eyes on the road... those locations are actually where it is hardest to use. It is easiest to use on a straight freeway or in surburbia, but that is where the roads are either lit, the road conditions are most predictable, or there are other aids like Distronics also... Now if they had projected night vision on the windshield as a HUD....

I thought that before getting my S600 that night vision would be more useful than the Distronics Plus, but it is definitely the other way round.. The Distronics is majorly useful in all sorts of driving conditions...

^^^I agree, the system would be much better with a HUD.

Though our S 280 doesn't have a "night vision" it does have a fridge behind the rear seat divider. That does come in handy in Bangkok.

Well said, i could not have put it better myself. One of the reasons i did not have Night Vision put on the W221 i have ordered. As i mainly drive in the City.

there are a couple euro options that i am envious of:

1. Fridge (i dont know how much trunk space this eats up!!)
2. Passion leather option (full leather, dash and doors)
3. Rear tray tables (I wonder if these are auto like in the Audi)

If I remember right, the fridge device is the same as on a W220. You would need to have the ski sack option. The fridge detaches if you need the space at the boot (and will have two doors to close the opening). The fridge itself should not be difficult to buy but the ski sack would need a number of parts to be changed.

I didn't see the passion leather a Euro option, isn't it available in the US too?

It is a UK option. Not available in the US. You have to get designo on the 550 for all the extra leather and you are limited to three colours.
