Text messaging
I notice the word "text message" on my phone menu on the large screen. Has anyone actually been able to text using the comand system or been able to retrieve a text message from it? I would never text back to someone with it while driving, but I would like to be able to read a message on the fly. Sometimes I get into my car , hear the notification beep that I have a message of some sort, and then realize it was a text message after I get my phone either out of my pocket or out of the cradle. I would love to be able to retrieve it without having to reach for the phone and having to read it off of the phone.

From what I have read in the manual, Text Messaging only works when you have the cradle phone, not bluetooth.

I believe it is also dependent upon the specific phone. WIth the Moto Razrv3M it does not work - in my prior car ('04 E55) with a Moto v60i it worked well - reading not sending however.

I just started using the Rzr V3 in a new cradle system. If it doesn't work, I don't care. Just wanting to know if it is something I might could use.
Thanks.

I was driving a 2013 C250 loaner the other day which I had paired with my Samsung Galaxy SII. It worked very well for phone calls, contacts, and even bluetooth streaming music, great.
I received a text while I was on the road and was surprised to see a notification and then was able to read the message on the radio LCD display.
I noticed again on my S550 COMAND their is a greyed out Text Message item in the Telephone menu, and was curious if newer phones would provide the matching compatibility. I read elsewhere that only messages received while connected are displayed, so I sent messages to my phone while paired and connected over Bluetooth, but no luck. The C250 COMAND had a "Notifications" toggle for texts but I don't see anything on the S550 COMAND.
I know DieselBenz can read and write SMS messages on his COMAND but he has a cradle.
Has anyone seen text functionality over Bluetooth? If so what phone?

back in sept 2011 i bought my father a 2011 e350. it was around labor day i recall and the 2012s were soon to come out so i picked up one of the last 2011s. however, my dealer told me that i was lucky because benzo started putting some 2012 components in the late 2011s and in my case this e-class got the new colored dashboard and upgraded telematics. when i drove the car out to where my father lives 500 miles from me i noticed that my blackberry (non-cradled) paired easily and that my txtmsg came across in the comand screen and the car's system read them to me audibly in a computerized voice. i thought how cool is that?
this year i bought myself a 2012 cl-class 550 and was hoping that i would have the same feature as my father's late 2011 model e-class with some 2012 components included. no such luck. the comand in my 2012 cl-class operates very much as did my previous 2007 s-class. i find it interesting that mb/mbusa would upgrade the comand on a late 2011/2012 e-class but not on the 2012 cl-class. i cant speak for the s class but i would think that if the s class has the txtmsg fx so would my cl. perhaps when the 222 comes out the txtmsg reader will be available?

The W212 E class has a more powerful COMAND system including spoken address recognition instead of spelled addresses as in my 2008 W221 S class.
I think technology in cars is a leap-frog business. Each newly introduced model supersedes existing models. Sometimes the mid-cycle refresh includes technology updates, for instance the 2010 W221 S class also incorporated these changes which were not retroactive to prior year models, most likely because it requires more powerful hardware or memory.
I am disappointed for you that your 2012 CL COMAND features don't match the E class, but while the price is higher the production volume is nowhere near.
I think on such expensive vehicles they should design in a bit more future-proofing so you don't feel left behind in just a few years of ownership.
I bet you prefer getting in the CL to the E class though.

I use it on a pre-facelift W221. For more recent cars and more recent phones there is a new bluetooth profile that allows text message transfer from the phone to the car. I believe the latest iPhones too support this but I'm not sure about the head units that have this BT profile.

hitach- agree with what you wrote 100%. furthermore, i don't want to start a "class" warfare here but the cl is eons better than the e. with the exception of that txtmsg thing. haha. but my dad likes the e-class motor car and that is all that matters.

Works fine for me reading texts and writing .
I am using the UHI(oem connector) connected to a cradle with a 6310i Nokia phone(old) with a twin sim from my Iphone.(W221 from 2006 EU-model)
I find using Comand for writing a hassle ,turning and clicking but being able to read text is most practical.
Bear in mind this Comand has been designed 6-7 years ago ,agreed that NTG3 and even 3.5 becomes ancient(in IT terms) but still does what it should and is relatively user friendly as well..
