Keyless Go question
I haven't had a chance to verify this myself, but I was wondering if anyone's had personal experience with this hypothetical:
You have Keyless Go, and the engine is ON:
If someone leaves the car with the transponder (like you drop them off) and you drive away --
1. You get a red "key not detected" on the dash
2. The car operates normally
3. If you turn the car off, you won't be able to restart it.
4. You must get the key back!
I guess what I'm asking is Does anything happen to the car if you drive away without the Keyless Go transponder, other than not being able to restart the engine.
Thanks in advance!

Yes, you get a call from your wife (or significant other) , that she can't start the car after shopping at Wal-Mart.
She was driving and I decided to stay at the condo and get a nap, not remembering that the key was in my pocket. Instead , I get a phone call that it was time to take a stroll along the beach road to Wal-mart.
At least this happened to me not long after getting my car. I had to walk 2 miles from the beach house to the local Wal-Mart to get her back home. Needed to walk off a big lunch anyway!

Actually there is something else of far greater significance. If for some reason you do not notice the warning (it clears after approx 15 sec) and you drive for a while and then come to a complete stop - the car will shut down and be immobilized with no access to the systems. Supposedly this will only happen upon complete stop - like a red light.

Valet
A good thing can happen with this scenario.
If you for forget to give the key to a Valet, a good valet will notice he does not have the key and so he will park it upfront.
This happens to me now and then.

Humor is the best way to get through life sometimes. I'm actually on Amtrak train from Birmingham, AL to New Orleans, LA as I type. Haven't traveled via train in 12 years.....very relaxing with "very interesting" people on board I must say. The nice thing is it's very roomy way to travel.
Anyway, back on topic, make sure your spouse keeps a key to your car at all times Very embarrasing for a $145K car stuck at Wal-Mart

I thought it was my good looks. In S CA an S600 and a good tip doesn't always get you upfront when the lot is full of $100k-250k cars especially at a private club where the valets are not allowed and do not accept tips. But I'm a daddy now so don't care where the valet puts it.
But I found some good humor on the forgot the key upfront situation.
By the way just ordered an extra key at lunch after reading the story.
$259. Heavy.

I don't know about that Eddie Knopp...i've been in this situation countless times as i drop my wife off at a store (for instance) and she has the key in her purse. I drive off and go somewhere else only to realize that she still has the key and even though the red light has come on telling me the key is not there, the car does not shut down or immobilize. I've come to complete stops and whatever...only issue obviously is that when you turn the car off, you can't turn it on again, which, fortunately, i haven't had to deal with yet...

How will you lock car with spare key inside?
I'm not sure I get this line of thinking. Leaving a spare key in the S550 doesn't mnake sense. Or am I missing some humor in this???

For one, whenever you turn the engine off, a message flashes across the dash that says "don't forget to take your key" .........IF you did leave a spare key in the car and then leave with another key and lock the car, then...... I assume the car would lock, but then a rogue could come up to the car and press the unlock button and voila.... the car would unlock.
And he would be able to drive away

I think he meant that he ordered a spare key, maybe so they can both carry a key at all times?... not one to leave in the car since you won't be able to lock the car with any key recognized inside.

Yes just to have an extra key. For both of us to have and an extra at home. You cannot leave key in the car unless your looking for some insurance money after it dissapears.

Wait, the car stays running even if the Transponder is out of range? Thats not good. My Brother has a Jaguar and I believe that if you walk away it will just turn off. In case you get out of the car to get something and someone jumps in and takes off. Thats just crazy.

It operates off of a system called GSM (global system for mobile). It requires contacting your cell phone company and obtaining a phone number for a device about the size of a very small cell phone. It has a USB connection that inserts into your laptop USB port.
The device contains its own software built in, you download it onto your laptop and after that you can receive internet service via local cell phone towers just like your cell phone does.
Sierra electronics makes them for AT&T and the service is $60 a month for unlimited use.
Right now I am using it in my hotel room rather than using the $24/day Wi-Fi provided by the hotel. I feel the GSM is more secure also.
Normally at home I'm hooked up to my local cable high speed internet but at night it gets slow and I can switch to this GSM unit and go uninterrupted.
As long as you have cellphone coverage, you've got internet.
Really nice and I can easily see this being added to the S class in future cars (of course only when the car is in Park).

oh, so basically like a WiFi card right? Thought you were stealing internet, wanted in on it for some strange urge of a reason lol.
