Radar Detector does not work

Hello,

I have a 09 S550 I just bought and when I mount my Escort Passport 9500I on the windshield my radar does not work even the GPS option on the 9500i says "GPS LOST".

Does the glass have special coating on it that does not let the signla through?

Any work arounds?

Thanks.

Yes all the glass panels have coating, check your owner's manual for the spots that are clear.

I found a little uncoated spot on the lowest middle part of the windshield. The radar seems to be very low though. GPS on the radar still can not get a signal.

Is anyone using the detector in that position. Would love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks.

My understanding is DistPlus' various radars are incompatible w/radar detectors

CHP seems to be increasingly using lidar in their speed traps, for which radar detectors are largely worthless

Have never bothered w/radar detectors; know my surroundings well; have never had an issue, despite enjoying my 65 immensely...CA is far more reasonably enforced than silly places back East

Yes - welcome to the world of radar problems with the new S550 - Please drive within speed limits -because NO RADAR DETECTOR WILL WORK 100% - The Infra-red coating on the glass will not let any detector work as well -
I have an 09-S550 loaded and can't use with any radar detector - period - besides some other stupid issues will I am listing separately
- Sorry !

If you must have radar detectors or laser jammers (if legal in your jurisdiction), you should consider custom-installed products that are hard wired. This is only true for non-Distronic Plus cars.

You can check out the newer Escort 9500ci (with Escort ZR4 laser shifters included). It is one of the more expensive units out there, but it is also one of the better ones in its category. For maximum laser protection, it seems that the Laser Interceptor is one of the best, scoring much higher than the ZR4). However, I have no experience with the LI.

Hope this helps.

That's the main problem my friend - MB should not have chosen the K band for distronic and parktronic radars !!! Oh well - guess I should just believe i am living in Virginia or Canada !

I do not have a distronic. I could go with hidden solution but do not want to spend a lot of money on it. What is the basic soulution without having to so too much mods to the car?

Canada indeed! Now in Ontario, if you do over 150 kms (90 mph.) , or if you are above the speed limit by 50 kms (30m.p.h.) they take away your keys and your car for 1 week!!! Kind of hard to depend on the radar detector. I just can't trust my escort, and I'm still not sure if it works...
So you just have to pick your spots, accelerate like hell now and then to appreciate the smoothness and power, and then back off once you've made your moves. Here in Toronto, the cops seem to have favorite spots that you get to know after a while...

I completely agree with your comments relative to the Escort and Laser Interceptor's (LI)! I'm in the process of upgrading my three cars to the limited edition high powered LI's. In fact, I saved a couple dollars by way of the "group buy" on this site.

Thanks.

Lots of laser use in Southern California...strange that there is none in the Bay area.
