Why does everyone want the ABC? After all of the very expensive pump and shock failures I've heard about, is it worth the risk, or have they figured out how to improve the quality lately?

The simple answer is that after you have spent any time driving an ABC equipped vehicle, driving anything else just doesn't cut it. 5000lb vehicles handle like sports cars, cornering dead flat, almost defying basic physics with daily driving feeling incredibly accurate and safe.

As far as cost is concerned, I lived through the Airmatic suspension failure of the 2000 W220 with nearly every major component being replaced, so to me the ABC looks like a vast improvement.

2007 S 600 / '06 911 Porsche C4S cab
power trunk, ventilated seats (front and back), power rear seats, abc, adaptive seats, keyless, heated steering wheel, rear camera, rear climate controls, wood trim.
... I made this list up while preparing to order a new S 550, since I was so spoiled from these options in my '04 S class, that I would miss them ( most were previously available) Hence, I decided on the S 600 which has them all plus alcantra lining which is really nice.
Distronic can be useless, if you drive the car and don't want it "parked" behind some codger on the highway. (an option on the S 600) Futhermore, I didn't want night vision, as I live in the city and it's too much of a distraction, as noted in recent threads...
If it's one's first S 550, you won't miss the options, but they're nice to have...

Agreed - keyless go is a beautiful thing and the pano roof is so much nicer than the standard one.

Don't skimp on the options. The only one I thing is a definite pass is the rear sunshades. AMG is mostly cosmetic and I still don't feel it looks better but many here will disagree. ABC is expensive and one of the few options I don't have. It seems the people who do think it's worth the money.

I like the rear shades . It helps to keep the heat down.

Porsche Macan S SportDesign / Ex M-B's: 11 & 10 & 06 E350's, 02 S500
Pretty much everything my S500 had.

Keyless go, Auto trunk, etc. are not a big deal to me. And I've never liked sacrificing structural integrity in any way so Pano roof isn't ideal for me. But the Distronic, Vented seats, ABC suspension (although I haven't extensively driven Airmatic so I can't say if it's a must to me) Massage/Dynamic seats, Parktronic, etc. were all immense luxuries that I enjoyed.
