It's actually kind of sad to see how far the 750i has fallen. BMW needs to style the 7 more in line with the 335 Coupe. That's about the sharpest looking bimmer on the road right now.
What about the 6?

Don't like the new 6. Simply looks like it's past it's prime. If you recall, the current 6 is still based off the Bangle-butt styling - although I'll admit that they've toned it down a few notches....

Regardless, it simply lacks that "presence"......

As I said - BMW is in for some rough times. Every time I hear a BMW commercial it sounds desperate - like they're almost begging you to buy one (free oil changes, free maintenance, free this and that)

It might be too late already.

2015 S550, 2016 Escalade
I took a long time to compare these two vehicles and ultimately decided on a 7. I'm extremely happy with my decision.

Here is some more useful info comparing the 2010 S550 to a 2009 750Li:

Notice that the S550 comes standard with a lot more items than the 7:
  • 600-watt surround-sound system (req. Premium Sound Package on a 7)
  • In-dash 6-disc DVD/CD changer (req. Premium Sound Package on a 7)
  • In-dash SD memory card reader (not available on a 7)
  • Media interface iPod integration (req. Premium Sound Package on a 7)
  • Zagat Survey® ratings guide for restaurant, golf, and hotels in Nav. (not available on a 7)
  • Attention Assist driver drowsiness monitor (not available on a 7)
  • Adaptive Highbeam Assist (req. Driver Assistance Package on a 7)
  • Automatic trunkgate operation (req. Convenience Package on a 7)
  • Soft close automatic doors (req. Convenience Package on a 7)
  • Front ventilated seats (req. Luxury Seating Package on a 7)
The 7 comes standard with the following, which a S550 does not:
  • Auto-hold brake (not available on a S550)
  • Premium nappa leather upholstery (req. Premium Leather Option on a S550)
  • Keyless Start/Stop (req. Premium 2 Package on a S550)
  • Park Distance Control (req. Premium 2 Package on a S550)
  • BMW Ultimate Service (not available on a S550)
Options available on an S550 not available on a 7:
  • Panorama Sunroof
Options available on a 7 not available on a S550:
  • Integral Active Steering
  • Side View Cameras
  • Head-up Display
  • Ceramic Controls
  • Massaging rear seat
  • Smartphone Integration

But which looks sharper, has better road presence and screams elegance?

Also, as I said earlier - I've yet to see a 2010 750iL on the road here in Austin. This in a city where I see S550/65's/63's every 1-2 miles in certain areas (Ferrari's, Lamborghini's every 2 days or so, Aston Martin's every day at least).

Not trying to put down your car - I know you love it. Just trying to state what I see.

You might also want to read this W221/750i/A8 comparison..... and see who wins in the end.

This is great news for us as the economy picks up (now). There will be far less S class supply in the used market helping to assist a little bit in holding up the resale value. We need all the help we can get. As a guage of what an S600 might be worth in four years, I just saw a really nice 03 S55 with 63k miles go for $20k.

I've said before the S does beat the 7 in all those respects. It is far more elegant and striking on the exterior. The 7, however, beats the S550 hands down on the interior.

I wrote on the other post that the 750Li they used didn't have the sport package (it was without Active Roll Stabilization and Integral Active Steering). A little unfair to compare an S550 with ABC to that!

BTW... Car and Driver has it the other way around:

http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/comparisons/09q2/2009_bmw_750li_vs._2009_mercedes-benz_s550-comparison_tests

and InsideLine says "the BMW flagship is once again one of the finest, most likable automobiles in the world... It rates with the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG at a price tag less than a Mercedes S550."

Bottom line there will always be personal preferences. Argument could go on for a long time. Personally I would be happy to drive either. We are fortunate to have these choices. What I call a "luxury problem" for someone trying to decide between the two. Disagree with the Insideline quote though about rating with 63 and priced below 550. Neither of those two points are true.

I'm leaning towards the 2009 750Li too, really like the standard nappa (like AMG) leather and black ash wood. Saves me a few bucks not having to go Individual or (Designo on the S550).

I had a 2006 750Li and absolutely hated the iDrive. The new one feels much better (as it's faster). Fully optioned, the 2009 750Li is significantly cheaper than the S for leasing.

I like the S550 very much too, but agree with Hayden on the nicer interior.

An interesting comment as BMW just announced, contrary to earlier speculation, that there would not be an M7 at this time.
