My father's brand new S350 was rear-ended today

I was bringing it back from a detail shop today all happy looking at the shine of the black paint after we got it polished and had some paint sealant applied. I was about to exit the freeway when there was a traffic jam ahead and cars were all stopped. I stopped in time but some guy changed into my lane and thought cars where moving, and thus accelerated. He then braked hard when he noticed all cars were stopped but it was too late. He hit me from the back and then my car hit the car in front of me. Then FOUR other cars hit each other that were in the same lane that were behind the guy who hit me.

I was heartbroken to see the damage. The car doesn't even have 1,000 km on it! Rear bumper is gone with only minor damage to the front. The car also has the AMG package and left exhaust has been bent. On the front, there are a few scratches and the front grille is slightly broken.

The glamor of having a new car (even though it's not exactly mine) has totally been ruined for me. I just hope they can fix it up and make it look new again.

I'm sorry for that, but...try to take it easy...it's just a car.

It happens, but it sure is a terrible feeling when it does happen.

I hope the other driver is well insured.

Cost of repairs/replacing damaged parts came out to a total of $21,000.

bummer

Sorry to hear that.

Got any before/after pics?

$21k? Wow. That's nuts. Hopefully you're good friends with your insurance co.

Thanks to everyone for your concern but I was the only one in the car when it happened and I barely felt anything. Just a slight nudge.

As for pics, unfortunately I didn't take any pics after the accident but the rear bumper was gone along with both exhausts (they were bent) and the rear under body where the spare wheel is was also dented. As for the front, the grill was cracked due to my car hitting the car in front from the impact from the rear. This is all I could see but there could have been more invisible damage that the Mercedes-Benz agency saw.

We told the agency that we wanted everything replaced rather than fixed which is probably why the repair costs are so high.

This truly sucks. I know what you must be going through.
When we first got our old GL450 (Premier), the 2nd week we had it, it was rear-ended. As you said, it really does ruin the new car experience.

I hope your S gets fixed perfectly and you'll be able to get it back quickly as well.

Dig that Obsidian Black S63 though saving for an Iridium one.

If all those You Tube video postings are not anti-Arab propaganda perhaps it is not surprising that your father's car was hit. Do motorists go really fast in Dubai?

Actually, the car that hit us from behind wasn't driven by an Arab. It was an Indian in a very cheap and old car (some really old Mazda).

As for driving fast, yes, people do tend to drive fast here. However, they have added some high-tech speed cameras all over Dubai to catch these people. The fines are very high for speeding. Overall, these cameras have really cut down speeding.

I understand a lot of your illegal immigrants come from India. Not sure how insurance works there, but is this guy going to pay?

I don't think he was illegal. He had insurance and all of the other required paper work and documents. Yes, his insurance company will be paying for the damage to our car.

SLIGHTLY off topic but Dubai has a lot of Indians working as slaves brought in for labor. They aren't there illegally. Their passports are confiscated upon arrival and they'll never earn enough to leave.

Bankruptcy laws in north America and Europe are far too lenient. The Dubai situation is common in the rest of the world. A bankrupt would have to pay off his debt before allowed to own a passport again in places like Singapore and Hong Kong. There is nothing wrong with laws requiring people to honour their financial obligations.

We got the car back yesterday. Everything seems to be fine. The two tailpipes of the exhaust are not perfectly aligned. The left exhaust is very slightly pulled outward than the right exhaust. You can only notice it if you really stare at it. I'll guess we shouldn't worry too much about it.

However, there is now a 1 to 2-inch pen mark on the steering wheel.

We didn't notice it till we got home. Will soap and water remove it?

I am sorry to hear the ordeal you had to go through. Glad you got your car back. But, remember, it's just a car. An inanimate object. It will eventually get old like everything else!
