Such is human nature. Embrace change. [/QUOTE]

Look what all the change the dark guy brings, unfortunately change is all we will have left in our bank accounts when his term is up.

PS: The last time I looked while driving I couldn't see my own rear or front lights no matter how much I stretched. The twenty grand I "saved" by buying my 09 can go towards health care for so many in 4 -5 years.
Lucky me

For the record.... the old taillamps, brakelamps and center stop light are LED.

I really don't understand why anyone would want to change to the refreshed lights. The pre MY10 are LEDs, the housing is more complex, the bands painted to match the body color makes them look like an integrated part of the car. The new ones are big red pieces of plastic. The other day I parked near a MY10 S class and took a good look at them. I asked my wife what she thought and she said "I think they make the car look like a cheap Japanese car". I didn't tell her some people were actually paying a lot of money to convert to them. If you ask me, the new lights were a cost saving measure and people should be looking to convert to the old ones, not the new.

Please keep that crap on the off-topic sub-forum.

Anyway,

MB needs to figure out a slightly different LED style on the S63/65.
I agree with this.

Nope, that's not the reason (at least for me). The reason is because they look cheap, make the whole car look cheap, and I don't like them.

I don't really like the LED turn signal mirrors for the same reason.

IMO, it would look a lot better if the LED's shone onto a reflector. That way, you'd get a contiguous bar of pure white light instead of individual dots.

I like this idea too... it would make the tail lights look "less cheap". Now if only MB kept the laquer stripes that made the tail lights look more integrated with the rest of the body...

It's good to know that the pre '10's have LED's... which IMO they should have. Perhaps it's the way they look that confuses people. Since I don't have access to a S-Class right now, I can't verify if they really are LED or not, but if they are then that's good news.

And I agree with you, the new tail lights make the new 2010 S-Class look more like a "cheap" Japanese car from the back... too bad.

before and after

here is mine after an update on the rear lights. the S550s before facelift are starting to show their age - gotta get with the times boys, and drop the taillights with the ugly painted stripes! just kidding, each to their own, folks like different things.

If there any takers out there with 2010 S550 that would like to "downgrade" to the old striped lights, I got two for sale!!! I doubt any one will, but what the hell!

LOL, since when did changing lights turn into ugly political banter. I am sorry if what I said had any political innuendo in it, believe me, I didn't mean it. Sorry if I struck a wrong chord somewhere amongst the diehard americans here....

I think the LED strips on the Audi's look very cheap. They had the cool "wow" factor when they first came out on the R8, but the first time I saw them in my rear view on the A4, I was thrown off. The individual glow of each LED really does cheapen the look. I agree with previous posts... make a reflector that makes it look like one continuous strip. (never mind the other safety benefits of LEDs. LOL). Must say I'm not feeling the new LED accents on the 2010 models. But to each their own.

Hey CL55_Serge,

Off topic, but quick question concerning your wheels. How big are the lips and do you have any issues with them rubbing?

Thanks,
Tony

Let me measure exactly - I'll get back to you. I've seen rubbing in the front when I crank the wheel all the way into a driveway, there is no way to really avoid that, so you need to roll two spots on the fender. Not a big deal.

In the rear, once again there are two spots that need to be rolled. If you don't - you risk pulling back the sheetmetal and possibly cracking the paint. I'll try to take some pics and post them when I get a chance.

Thanks, for the response. I as far as mine go, the rear has no issues. However with the front, I could lower it as much as I wanted because it did rub slightly when I hit dips or bumps. My biggest issue is driving the crappy roads here in New Jersey and New York. My current wheels have 2.5 inch lip on the front rims and 4 inches on the rear. I'm thinking about changing my wheels and getting some with a larger lip (front 3.5-4 inches and rear 4.5 -6 inches) so I'm trying to get a comparision of what type of experience other people are having.

Thanks again,
Tony

You know, lip measurements are relative. If can get a lot more lip if you curve your wheel centers inwards from the wheel hub to the area where the lip and the back rim bolts up on a 3 piece wheel. Example of that can be see on BWM 7 series cars with say 7" lips. You can achieve the same overall wheel/tire width with a 4" lip, but the wheel centered are convex, not concave.

So you should be able to get a larger lip without worrying about any rubbing since your tire placement would not change, considered the wheel center is set up correctly. Now, whether the centers will continue to look good if they are becoming more convex is something you have to be concerned about.

Yeah, i know. Right now the wheels I have are 2-piece 22" Symbolic Concave 2Tone wheels, I'm currently looking at the Vossen VF082s, or the new concave wheels their coming out with or the D2Forged Concave CV2s or VS4s. I do like the 3 piece wheels, but in New Jersey the road are not forgiving. Below is a picture of my 750Li, it had 3-piece 22" Asanti Af128s with 3" front and 6" rear lips and I didn't have any issues with rubbing at all. I wish the S550 would accommodate the wider wheels the same way.

Damn impressive active safety tech, esp if one realizes how primitive is Porsche's or Ferrari's latest lighting tech when observed on a fast fwy (or mtn twisties) in comparable weather/day/nt situations
I think I passed you the other day on your way to the annual SV fox hunt. You are the safety king and I couldn't help but notice that you had bolted an actual Chinese to your front bumper waving a large maglite. Just curious if you've noticed any performance differences with that safety mod? Lower or higher insurance?

S550 can't eat the lip the 750 does - check out the 750 at my house; same Asanti wheel as you, but with a 7" lip (one-off):

Your 750 is looking good, its unfortunate that the S550's wheel well is so shallow.
