new LED lights
What do you all think of the new lights? Cool, or too flashy? Too Audi like and wannabee-ish? Does it make you want to upgrade your car to one with the new lights?
Do you think MB is on the right track with these or do you think they're a fad?
They look good to me, but maybe they're a bit much...
thoughts??

Too many benefits over halagens to be a fad, I like them; maybe because they are differant from older w221's. I would do the mod if it was inexpensive but price will dictate that mod for me.

I'm guessing that you couldn't change over to them even if you wanted to because of the different shape, placement etc.

Thumbs up to MB for finally making the tail + brake lights LED.
But I personally think the LED tail lights make the car seem cheap due to the huge red plastic tail light cover (without the matching color laquer stripes to break up the plastic look), and they only look so-so... maybe a little worse. I much prefer the previous tail light assembly (which looked so expensive and sophisticated and unique in my book), and would rather MB keep the same tail light assembly, but replace the bulbs with LED's (like they did with the E-Class brake lights when they did the facelift in '07... and that the current SL has).
As for the headlight/foglight assembly, I personally think they look extremely cheap and offer little value over the previous Bi-Xenon + Foglight assembly. The LED strip below the headlights look very Audi-ish, and the small LED strips that replaced the fog lights look VERY out-of-place and aftermarket-ish. I'm not even sure how much they can light up the road ahead of you compared to the old fog lights or the quad-fog lights (but I won't say anything until I get to check one out first-hand).

I don't like the look either.
Cheap, mass-production-like feel to it.

The only advantage, in my opinion is the longevity of the LED lights (and Christmas theme around the corner, so they match ).
Although, I'm not aware of anybody replacing neither rear or fog burned out bulbs.

I always drive fully lit-up, even in CA sun...to maximize my active safety
What one doesn't fully appreciate until see live another new S/CL missling along a fast fwy (or even in slow city traffic) and lit-up is how valuable are powerful/smart lighting systems at any speed or in any weather or day/nt
Damn impressive active safety tech, esp if one realizes how primitive is Porsche's or Ferrari's latest lighting tech when observed on a fast fwy (or mtn twisties) in comparable weather/day/nt situations

Perhaps I should have made my sarcasm more dripping in that post.
Porsche's technology is every bit as good as MBs, especially in areas like "lighting".
WSH thinks a CL65 handles better than a 997 GT3. What can you really say to that. The man is simply insane.

Therefore he is innocent of any stupidity he is blabbing on this site (since he is insane).

LED's have many advantages for lighting (faster response, lower power consumption, color, etc), and are normally a huge upgrade. However, I don't like the way the LED strips are designed on the new MB's and Audis. I think seeing the individual LED's looks cheap and tacky. I don't really like the LED turn signal mirrors for the same reason.
IMO, it would look a lot better if the LED's shone onto a reflector. That way, you'd get a contiguous bar of pure white light instead of individual dots.

You guys don't like it coz you don't own them. In a year or two, everyone on this thread will switch over to the newer facelifted model, then all of you will gush over how great/nice/fantastic/beautiful/ground-breaking the new lights are.
Such is human nature. Embrace change.
