Facelift Taillights on Pre-Facelift S550?

Does anyone know if the taillights swap is direct plug and play? My friend is looking to upgrade his 08 taillights with the 2010 ones and was wondering if it's a direct swap. I know on the 5 series, the LCI taillights don't directly swap onto the 06/07's and require some type of computer swap aswell.

Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Requires the rear signal activation/acquisition module (rear SAM) - otherwise the top two rows of the rear running lights will not work. Also, depending on the age of your current rear SAM, the rear lights will completely turn off after something like 20 minutes (happened to me)... The new rear SAM module will need to be coded to the CAN-bus by a tech.

He will be very happy with the results though - the old lights look like crap compared to the new ones.

Thanks for the detailed response. Can this module be purchased from the dealer? The tech at the dealer would be able to code it? This is 100% doable with the SAM correct?

The dealers typically don't like dealing with mods, you'll have to find a tech that will work with you. Ask a service advisor at the dealership if they know a tech that can do it for you.

Right, 100% doable, but not without the rear SAM. Here is a picture of my wife's car ('07 S550).

I heard that the rear SAM was on backorder a while back - maybe that's what's going on?

CL55_Serge,
I like your AMG rear bumper's lower panel conversion, and am thinking about doing the same to mine. Can you please help me out with its part number? Can't seem to find it on internet, thanks!

I don't have the part number in my receipts, but the part I ordered was a "rear bumper lower valance" for a '08-'09 S63.

I'm fabricating some nice tips that will resemble the S65 dual "joined" tips that will be finished in white porcelain. They will take up the rest of the extrusion openings in the valance nicely.

Not sure if you also noticed, but we have removed the body line from the rear bumper like on the 2010 cars - so the rear bumper is completely smooth. Easy and a nice facelift idea.

I'll take a shot and post. I'm still working on the tips though.

I didn't notice it until you mention it, yes, very clean. Thanks for the help, I think I'm going to get the lower valence and aftermarket mufflers designed for the S63, or simply get the S65 mufflers, who knows, playing by ears now.

If you want to go down the path of S65 exhaust, check out these guys - nice muffler system with the S65-style tips. Should be able to get it a little under $2k range - cheaper than the S65 exhaust for sure:

http://gthaus.com

Select the S65 exhaust with the connected oval quad tips.

I dont want to hijack the thread but I thought there were enough around already. Anyway, I'm a little confused and I'm just asking for a bit of clarification.

Seems that there are quite a few sellers out there and most that I can find claim that theirs are plug and play. Absolutely no other work needs to be done. That said, I've read in these forums about reprogramming the SAM and having to cut and cross wires during installation. There is also a huge price difference. I've seen anywhere from 399 to 599 and they appear to be the same.

Can anyone chime in here and clear this up for me please? I'm just looking for someone to clarify if in fact these ones are plug and play, that they function like the new ones and that could confirm pricing.

Cheers.

Facelift S550 rear brake lights, plug-n-play, no errors, top and bottom rows light up wihen applying brakes, went with smoked instead of clear on pewter body, looks great imo. Purchased from Express Body Parts Inc, North Hollywood, CA, installed in about 15 minutes by recommended local MB body shop, parts and labor 487.00. Express is working with its supplier to possibly secure plug-n-play front head lights and DRL's, no date on when they will have it, but I will definitely update this thread if and when they become available because I do not want the hassle of the errors, new SAM's and reflashing seemed to cause everyone else that has gone OEM.
