3 quarts of oil in 700 miles on S550 with 46k miles

M7 2007 S550 suddenly started using 1 quart of oil every 250 miles. I called my local (Nashville) service advisor after having added 2 quarts in 500 miles and he began to explain to me that the cars sometimes use a little oil while highway driving. I explained that this was excessive and scheduled an appointment for it to be checked. Of course my advisor was not available when I brought the car in so I was passed to another advisor who began with the same explanation. I stopped him and explained that I was now up to 3 quarts in 700 miles. He stated that that seemed a little excessive - a little excessive#!#!@$!???? I don't want a $100k car that has to have the oil topped off at every fuel fill up and at least once between fill ups. This is insane.

This afternoon I was passed to a third service advisor who informed me that they would be conducting an oil consumption test and that I had to bring the car back in 621 miles. They couldn't look at the 3 low oil alerts that have happened in the last 700 miles, they must now conduct an oil consumption test. I asked what happens when I get 250 miles on the car and get the next oil warning - and they responded that I should call them when that happens. I can't even get the same service advisor throughout the day, how am I supposed to get in touch with a service advisor after hours when on the road to "ask permission" to put in more oil in my own car.

Needless to say I am not happy with the car and even more upset with a dealership that thinks I am dumb enough to believe that 3 quarts in 750 miles is simply a little excessive.

Somehow my 2006 S430 uses less than 1/2 quart between oil changes every 13000 miles, my 2007 GL450 doesn't seem to use any oil between changes but I am supposed to believe that my S550 is expected to use 1 quart every 250 miles during highway travel and that is considered acceptable or perhaps a little excessive.

Has anyone else experienced any issue like this? I've searched the forums and cannot find a similar issue.

Sorry for the venting but I am frustrated beyond belief. I love owning Mercedes but for the first time in years am considering trading in all 3 of them for something else - if I can just find something I like. At the very least it is time to find a new dealership.

Sorry to hear you having that kind of frustration, but with many companies they need to go through many steps to get a conclustion from a method of deduction. 3 quarts is crazy for such a short distance for sure, but did you look 22 threads down from this one. It may have some help. GL.

Now I know why a resident of Franklin buys their cars from me in Charlotte. I can understand maybe being passed off if your advisor is busy and you don't want to wait for him/her, but a third pass off would be annoying. Good luck with your issue, I am sure they will find the source eventually. Is it leaving any oil on the ground? If not, I would think something like a head gasket maybe?

no leaks

No, it is not leaking oil at all. My garage floor does not show a single drop of oil anywhere. I would feel better if there were a leak.

Another concern

My Mercedes dealer always sends me a survey when they have completed satisfactory service on my vehicles. Interestingly enough both times I have not been satisfied with the service, I never receive a survey. It seems that Mercedes Benz of Nashville wants to hide the negative feedback they may get from Mercedes by not sending surveys to any customer that might have satisfaction issues. Perhaps I am misreading their intentions, but I would love to know if others have experienced this problem.

You realize though that the underbody is covered in plastic trays.

3 quarts of oil in 750 miles are representative of a huge problem.

I'm surprised you didn't foul any plugs with that much oil consumption.

it does have plastic covering, they are not sealed though. If they oil is leaking, it will come out somewhere.

1 quart in 621 miles is Mercedes' limit for acceptable consumption, which is still ridiculous, IMO. That's 21 quarts of oil between changes.

3 quarts in 750 miles is way beyond excessive. 52 quarts of oil between 13000 mile changes? Would there ever be a need to even change the oil? WTF.

They'll fix this.. keep us posted. FWIW, my M271 Kompressor 4 uses about half a quart over 13000 miles and has 76,000 hard miles on it. And that engine ain't known for being a jewel.

No, they aren't sealed, but if its not pooling and rather just being blown over the covers and then mixing with dirt, it will just conjeal and not drip.

None of the benzes I have experience with have burned any oil, whatsoever.

jsut keep going back to the dealer.

I know it sounds ridiculous but....If the car is still under the warranty and a light comes on can you bring it back to service every time the light comes on. It seems to me eventually they will fix it since they will get tired of seeing you in the place, I would also complain in front of the other customers, talk to the dealership GM and your salesman. And with the price of synthetic oil let them pay for it. I also would call MBUSA after the consumption test and start a complaint file and ask to have a rep come out. The dealerships hate when you go over their head.
Good luck

Mercedes
if its still under warranty and its brought in enough times, you can lemon law it and get back every penny you paid for the car with no depreciation.

that would be the route I took
