It's nothing special, and a waste of money to have it built permanently into the car. My latte sipping, Coach driven co-workers in Silicon valley already enjoy this functionality with MiFi (often referred to as Mobile Hot spot) devices wired into the coaches, or more like duct taped to a window on the bus.

The devices are powered by rechargeable batteries and connect to the Carrier network using 3G or 4G (Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T ). That signal is then shared over WiFi.

The beauty with these Mobile hot spot devices which are the size of an an iphone or smaller is that when you get to your destination you bring it inside to your hotel room or whereever and continue surfing.

Having a 3G mobile hot spot wired into the car permanently is a dumb idea, and a total waste of money.

I wonder if this will be available for US models. I know BMW has a similar system for in-car internet that also uses a pre-installed SIM card, but it's not for US models.

It's pretty interesting, I see that their testing a 4G system for the Command Unit. I think this would be beneficial on a long trip.

Mercedes-Benz Test myCommand with 4G Wireless High-Speed Internet;

Pardon my ignorance, but what the heck for? Both my phone and laptops are already connected, but I don't browse the web while driving.

So the passengers somehow can't have phones, laptops, or tablets? I can only imagine how miserable web browsing on a non-touch COMAND screen would be. Just because a technology exists, doesn't mean it has to be stuck everywhere.

I'm pretty sure that when the current technology that's in your car right now came out, there was someone saying the same thing. I bet you enjoy to technological advances that you have right now. Truly I don't think that every innovation should be put into the car, but if it's going to improved quality of life and increase the exchange of information then I'm all for it. I believe the innovations offer more than just being able to browse the internet.

Why would Comand need the Wifi connection from the car? Those laptops and tablets in the car would all make use of the WLAN signal at the car so that not all need their own cellular connection (be it 3G or something else) which could also suffer from IR windows in an S-class.

You are egoistic, what about others in the car?

I didn't think this was going to be such a passionate topic, but I did think that it was interesting to see some of the innovations in area of communication/information exchange going into cars. It's good to see people are passionate for and against innovation. These types of struggle are what makes us all learn to adapt and overcome and this made me think of the many definitions associated with progress. So is this true progress or merely a progress trap? Everyone's definition of progress is different.

  • Progress (history), the idea that the world can become increasingly better in terms of science, technology, modernization, liberty, democracy, quality of life, etc.
    • Social progress, the idea that societies can or do improve in terms of their social, political, and economic structures.
    • Scientific progress, the idea that science increases its problem solving ability through the application of some scientific method.
    • Philosophical progress, the idea that philosophy has solved or at least can solve some of the questions it studies.
  • Idea of Progress, the theory that scientific progress drives social progress; that advances in technology, science, and social organization inevitably produce an improvement in the human condition.
  • Progress trap, the condition societies find themselves in when human ingenuity, in pursuing progress, inadvertently introduces problems that it does not have the resources to solve, preventing further progress or inciting social collapse.

It is cool to have something like that already in a car on a second thought, thats why i got my own. With the age of technology something like this needs to be on every car if you ask me.
I still don't think we should pay a premium for such option, besides the monthly payment.

I agree with you, I think that this should be a standard option with service coming directly from Teleaide or Mbrace as part of your annual subscription.

I see, you have a device that can share the cellular internet access over WLAN (my phone can do it too but this feature is not used often). Meaning you have built the same set-up more or less as MB is offering.

I think it is a very cool idea, not everyone knows how to make their phones hotspots or how to tether their phones and if you are like a lot of MB owners that have iphones they don't even support it unless it's jailbroken. I think it will be as successful as how easy they make the service to setup/signup for.
