60k for 2008 or 50k for 2007
Hello MBWorld folks, I am looking to become a member of the S class membership soon and want to glean your advice. In No. Calif there are several CPO S Class cars available, two have my eye. One 2008 for about 60k and the other is a 2007 for about 50k, both under 15k miles. With the 2008 I'll get an additional year of CPO warranty and with the 2007 I can save 10k or spend a bit to add an additional year or two warranty (don't want major costs during the pay off period which I plan on for two years). What do you folks think? Is the 2008 worth the extra 10K or is the 2007 a good deal and still a great/reliable car. Note that the 2008 is the non-sport model, p2 with the rear seat package and the unusual 19" wheels, the 2007 is has the sport package and p2.
Thanks for your advice, if I can get my wife to agree I'll be joining you folks soon.

I was in a very similar situation when I bought my 07 S550 in May 2010. I decided to get the 07 because the body styles were the same and because the prices were so different. I would be surprised if the 08 doesn't go down another 5-10k by January 2011. Right now, my s550 (P2) keyless with 19inch AMG wheels really turns heads because the average person doesn't know what I am driving. I did the bluetooth and a tail light conversion and that put me over the Top!
Good Luck.
Good Luck.

A few things to consider. The 2007 had a few quirks on the early models such as an antenna on the trunk, annoying "don't forget key" chime and early nav version. The last two can be update through software so if you buy the 07 I would make it part of the deal. Otherwise they are the same car. I am a fan of the sport package, so that would sway my vote. I think you should be able to save $3-4k off those numbers...

'09 S550V4, P3+AMG Sport PKG
I got an '09 CPO S550V4 with AMG+P3 pkg in the $60's
You may need to shop a little bit longer.. make friends with a dealer who can do a search for you but the deals are out there to be had.

I think you can do better with the pricing. I am in the same situation as you and I'm shopping around and in the Washington DC area, you can buy a 2007 CPO for the late 40s and surprising a 2008 CPO for the mid 50s. Both with less than 40K miles. So look around. I agree with the previous poster about these prices dropping further in early 2011. If you can wait I'd suggest you try to get a good deal in January 2011.

Also please check the front page with Rick Cell's thread "2007 s550 engine Problem". In the thread it talks about problems with some 2007 s550 engine timing chain and sprocket problems. It has the engine # that are affected with this problem, or make sure and get a good warranty.

Thank you members for the input, feedback and insight, I might just wait until Jan to let the 08's costs drop. Tough though, this car speaks to me and unless I can get a smokin deal, I'll have to patient to join the rest of you and hopefully return the favor of advice.

If you go solely on price you will miss out on some of the great things the S class has to offer. A 2007 with ABC, Distronic and Drive Dynamic seats is better than a 2010 with none of those options even at the same price. The problem is that there are some options termed individual options that do not show up as part of any Package, so simply stating the car has P3 doesn't really mean much. No P3 included Active Body control which is a $4000 option. Where in No Cali are you located?
