SPEEDRIVEN | S600 + $9000 = 700 hp (blog article)

In the world of Mercedes-Benz tuning, $9000 American doesn't usually buy you a whole lot. If you're shopping at RENNtech, $9000 will buy you a set of RENNtech wheels, but not tires. Over at Brabus, $9000 will buy you all manner of leather-covered things and some shiny, light-up interior bits, but not quite enough shiny, light-up bits to park your Benz alongside the cool kids from Quadrophenia. $9000 will also buy you the front half of a Mansory bodykit, assuming you want your Benz to look like a Cylon destroyer.

Here at Speedriven, though, things are different. We don't sell flash wheels, LED dress-up baubles, or questionable body kits. Here at Speedriven, we sell speed.

Keep that in mind when you look at the 2009 S600 up there. Sure, it may not look much different from the other Mercedes down at the Whole Paycheck, but one look under the hood of this Speedriven-prepared S600 is all it takes to see that this big Benz is different.

The Speedriven package fitted to the W221-chassis Mercedes S600 shown here features a polished set of Speedriven's top-mounted water-to-air intercoolers, “scorpion” air intakes, K&N cone filters, and Speedriven's ECU software to manage the extra air density and extra boost. The car also features Speedriven's transmission controller upgrades, allowing the car to handle the extra torque and giving the S600 a more “true” manual mode to hold gears more aggressively while delivering quicker, firmer shifts in “sport” mode (comfort mode retains the S600's usual silkiness).

With all the parts installed, this Speedriven-tuned S600 produces 695 hp and 840 lb-ft of daily-driver torque, which is huge, for a 600.

He(ck), 700 hp and 800 + lb-ft of torque is huge, period. You're not even getting that with the Black Series cars from - and you have to add another zero to the back of Speedriven's $9000 PKG price tag to make up for the difference from a more pedestrian standard AMG.

The cost for all the hardware necessary to replicate this 700 hp S Class is $8800, plus installation.

Article re-posted from Topspeed.com

Tuning firm, Speedriven, prefers to leave the flashiness to other tuning firms because that’s just not what they’re about. Instead of the LEDs, the gargantuan rims, and the flamboyant body kits, these fellas are all about fine-tuning engines. What’s important to these guys isn’t so much the aesthetics on the car, but what lies underneath the hood.

Armed with that philosophy, the tuning company has announced their latest project: an engine upgrade for the Mercedes S600. Already packing a V12 engine with 510 horsepower on its own, Speedriven went out of its way to give the Merc a performance package for the ages. Among the additions include a polished set of Speedriven’s top-mounted water-to-air intercoolers, “scorpion” air intakes, K&N cone filters, and the company’s ECU software to manage the extra air density and extra boost.

On top of that, the modded S600 also comes with transmission controller upgrades, giving the car the capacity to handle the extra torque while also allowing for a “true” manual mode to hold gears more aggressively while delivering quicker, firmer shifts.

With all these elements inside the S600 the power output skyrockets up to 695 horsepower and 840 lb/ft of torque, enormous numbers for a package that will only set you back $9,000.

“You get about 700 horsepower for under nine grand, there’s not much more to say,” explains Speedriven’s Jo Borras.

Yep, no explanations needed. We’re already sold on this one.

^^ another great review of the car/kit. Thanks, guys!

Good grief. What is the effect on the 5-speed gearbox which hopefully can take 840 lb ft?

That gearbox can easily handle another 100 lb-ft without drama.

Is this the ultimate sleeper? (Jalopnik)

Your grandpa's plain-Jane W221 Mercedes-Benz S600 is his pride and joy. Ask him to borrow it, then show up with Speedriven's 695 hp kit installed. Imagine the joy on his weathered face when he finally smokes ol' Chester's Black Series.

The kit, which costs nine grand total and boosts torque to 840 lb-ft, includes a set of Speedriven's top-mounted water-to-air intercoolers, "scorpion" air intakes, K&N cone filters, and ECU software to handle the added air density and boost—along with a transmission-controller upgrade the company says provides a more "true" manual mode and adds a more aggressive tune to Sport mode.

Grandpa will be the hit at Century Village's weekly test and tune.

^^ re-post from Jalopnik.

You can see most of the hardware here, showing the intakes, filters, top-mounted intercoolers, and plumbing into the throttle-body. The ECU and TCU software upgrades are, of course, invisible.

Keep in mind, also, that the intercoolers themselves are available in a few finishes. The other photo was polished aluminum, this photo (below) is wrinkle-black powder coat.

Do you offer a cold air kit for the "scorpion" filters? If so would you sell the scorpion kit and cold air seperatly?

What is a phone number that I can call to inquire about the block programmer you offer?

At the moment we have no plans to offer the intakes separately, but it is something we can look at.

You can call our office line 847.485.8126 to talk about the Block Tuner, or head over to this post.
