Looks like hell as usual in it's R&D form. Looks like a Diesel model, with cut-off at 4500rpm
It's still too early too early to know how the new W222 S-Class, will look inside.
Lets hope that the olde world S-Class, lingers on somwhere in the interior, with the new one(W222)

I just hope they don't plasticize or Acurize the interior of the new S class like they have done for the W212. No offence intended either to plastic or to Acura but I have yet to like the interior of the W212 though the exterior has grown on me. The current S class interior is very elegant.

I'm all about the instrument cluster being an LCD screen. This truly opens up the possibilities for the interface. Not only can you choose what information/widgets to display, but use different design themes as well. I hope they open up the API to third party developers and allow downloadable content; you could then create you own, truly personalized dashboard views.

One LCD display in the cluster I can live with, but full LCD is not my cup of tea and especially since it's so rectangular and flat, like two laptop screens. At least try to keep some sense of the traditional speedo/tachometer cluster, I don't like where the interior designs are heading.

I really hope this is just r&d version and then production model will not have 1980s rectangular looking cluster with cheap plastic trim.
Edit,
I also hope those are not the gauges they are inking of using, extreemly un appealing.

Since its electronically controlled and the stalk is just a "trigger", you could pretty much mount the trigger anywhere in the car, including the headliner if you really wanted.
Therefore it does not "have" to be on the steering wheel.

By virtue of it potentially being anywhere, the steering wheel is the best place as it requires the least distraction and allows to keep your hands on the wheel at all times. Formula 1 cars don't have the shifters in the trunk for a reason. Granted that the shift paddles are separated from the selection clutch, the steering wheel still wins over the central console as the better option for many reasons (ergonomics, space, and so on).

Easily reachable doesn't mean convenient, safe, and/or ergonomically optimal. Just like the wiper controls, turn signals, cruise control lever, and the various trip computer and audio controls, steering wheel is the most optimal place for anything the driver needs with minimum distraction (read: keep the eyes on the road and both hands on the wheel).

Do you mean shift paddles or the main selector?

As many drivers use the main selector only couple of times while driving, they could be just buttons. If anything the selector stalk would be more of a distraction.
As for paddles, they are ok where they are. I still would have liked them to be larger than they currently are (for non AMG models), but they are ok.

I think it's ergonomically perfect; other buttons/levers on the steering wheel don't distract me either (I actually have a more difficult time working the windshield wiper controls). You just put your hands on the wheel and select the right transmission "mode" with a touch of the finger. Moving the gear into P is a breeze and there is no chance your passengers can accidentally move the shifter; the center console looks better this way too in my opinion.

Therefore, I don't see the need to have hands on the wheel when stopped.
