Sorry for my english, didnt know how to put the right words for topic, but anyways i keep seeing threads here and there about people retrofitting their headlights and people who want to do retrofitting but dont know where to start or which parts involved.
In order for us to have a 100% working guide we all need to contribute, if everyone brings something in it we will have step-by-step guide to complete the job easily without hassle and without damaging our wallet too much.
Here is the list of things needed to be done:
1. Type of harness. Is it 100% plug and play? is it plug and play but needs coding? Is it programming method only? If yes then who can do the coding and what tools are used? Das or Star or something else?
2. Parts List. Which parts involved in a process depends on a type of harness used.
3. Price. Due to the complication of this conversion it is cost effective usually around 5-6k. Its understandable that many people can afford it including me, but
considering that you can get 2010 model for 70-80k if not lower it wouldnt be smart to spend 6k for headlights only, not including bumpers rear tails etc.

I will start first, and i want anyone who can find good deal on some of the parts or harness etc to post here or to send me a pm, so i can update the list.

1. Harness/Programming/Conversion

Option A Sonic MS harness starting at 1600$ plug and play + coding


Option B Toa Auto (toa-auto.co.jp) i heard that is around 800, not sure yet, i will email them to confirm. This method seems completely plug-and-play. At least according to their youtube video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUxX7SnCkV0


Option C Master tunning harness with SAM cost 1400.00 shipped (you have to swap out the pins and put the pins back in their plugs they give you then its gonna be plug and play without coding)

P.S. Even if you know place to buy some of this parts for 20-30$ cheaper dont hesitate to post, because at the end 20 buck here and there will make a difference and i will be happy if we can pull this thing off and be able to complete conversion under 3k-3.5k. I am already in contact with my friends from UAE who are doing their best to find best prices.

Everything is basically easy. Just replace all the parts with the 2010 and up. 2010 headlights with three modules, 2010 front SAM, and that wiring harness from mastertuning, or sonicms.
Here comes the tricky part. You must leave your side marker lights that came with your car intact. If you remove the bulbs, the IC will say error "side marker lamp,left,right" So just leave them tucked in the new bumper and put some black tape around the bulbs. The car will not notice them missing. The new headlights will flash the turn signal led strip, and so will these. Old system and new working together, no big deal.
The most challenging part is to program the XALWA left,right modules for the headlights to recognize the Intelligent Light Control Functions. If you do not program these, your IC will say "Adaptive Lights Inoperative, Visit Workshop" error message. To do this you will have to replace the Central Gateway Module located on the bottom of the steering column. You will have to remove the Gateway from your car, install a Gateway from a 2010 S-Class.
You will then see all sorts of error messages on the dash, do not worry. Just do coding via SCN. Perform 'Initial Startup' for the XALWA modules, not for the Gateway. The 2010 Gateway will communicate with the 2010 front SAM. Your Gateway is coded for the 2007-2009 modules, it will not establish link with SAM.
Then put back your original Gateway, delete fault memory of all the modules.
Now you are done.
You will need someone with STAR coding.......dealers will never attempt anything like this. especially removing a Gateway from a 2010 car and installing it on yours.
So there you have it. This crazy retrofit project solved.

Regarding the adaptive feature........... how do we know if we need it. The Mercedes that I bought does not have the headlights.

Do I need to find out if I need the adpaptive feature?

The S550 did not have headlights. Its been something of a night mare trying to figure out what I need.

I am actually coming up to speed with TOA-AUTOs solutions and parts that I would need.

Since I don't have the headlights, I don't know what the car had before.

Do you think that I should go to the dealter with the VIN and ask them?

 

well yeah that would be adviseable, or you can just get headlights with night-vision and all the other oprions, to make sure they ll work. i just doubt dealer would be able to tell you this stuff
