i believe i read somewhere on here that the model with the fins on the trunk are the very first edition of the s550 and as such have certain deficiencies. how true is this? are these models that one should essentially avoid for whatever reasons?

Some of the early 221 7-speeds had transmission problems. Mostly related to the torque convertor. I would try to find an 08 as I have never need them fail yet if serviced correctly.

hey
with these early 2007 models with the fin on the trunk, can they be replaced with something (aftermarket or oem) less atrocious and ugly?

I believe the first half of the 07 models had antenna's on the trunk, the earliest with an antenna/fin in additional to the roof and later the bump. The last half or latest 07's had only one fin on the roof like later models.

The bump on the trunk of early models is a satellite radio antena. they had it for the first few years before integrading it in to the antena on the roof. There are a couple that had some trans issues but overall it's a million times better than 220 first few years. I think you will find plenty of 07 and 08 year owners here that have no issues . If you are that concern just look for 08 and up. And even then make sure to get something with extended warranty for a piece of mind and all service records. You'll be fine.
