What's the large memory card our car can read?
the 4gb CF card isn't cutting it for me. I'm thinking of getting a at least a 16gb but would like 32gb. What's the larges I can throw in there?

That depends on the type of pcmcia-card you are using.
I have recently purchased an sdhc-multicard-one and that one takes all kinds of memory-cards and sd-cards cards up to 32Gb ,using 16Gb now with no issues in the W221.

I'm using a CF card reader. So you're using a multicard reader in yours? Which one specifically are you using? I'd much rather use SD card over CF card since they're much cheaper and I got tons laying around.

X-actely!My thought: plenty of sd-cards everywhere...
Afaik you can get any pcmcia cardreader ,I got the cheapo one from ebay this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/330590691720...84.m1439.l2649 ,I think it reads a bit slow(the folders and the titles ,takes something like 10-20 secs)the music sounds fine as long as its 320K sampled.
You could also use a proper brand like this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mercedes-San...item3cb0321c32
maybe that reads the folders quicker.
Another option would be to use the proper MB one but which-ever one you choose ,it has to be sdhc to read the 'larger' volumes of sd-cards..
I have also tried to put several videoformats on the same sd-card, but that does not work at all(might also be the reason why it reads the folders slow-ish)

I don't think card reader would affect the reading speed of the card. It is what it is. Get an El Cheapo reader and save the money for a larger storage that's how I look at it.
BTW: Even with the ipod it's just as slow and you can't control it with the command while the PCMCIA you can so it's a no brainer.
32gb ipod = 225
32gb SD + card reader = $50 or less

I don't use itunes. I hate it since it's so locked down. You'll have to find out where your itune music or stored on your computer, then copy it from the HDD not the itunes.

It all depends on the quality the songs are encoded in. Personally I have my entire music collected encoded in a "lossless" format so I loose absolutely no quality. My music library is about 220 GB and the only way I could hav eit available in the car was with an iPOd.
Be careful with your urge to cram too much music in a relatively small storage card (even if 16/32GB) as you will pay for it in audio quality.

The manual says there is a limit of 4000 songs, but using a 32gb CF card with PCMCIA adapter I only see ~3500 mp3 files listed. I organize the songs under artist and album folders

I tried the San Disk reader and it does not work with a 32gb SD card. I also notice the audio quality was degraded during playback. I ended up going with dual layer DVD's which sound great.

for me I found, it took a long time(5minutes) and several tries => when ejecting the pcmcia-reader,the dvd 's came out one by one, finally after the mp3-dvd 's where all out;
comand saw the mp3-files on the sd-card, then I stuck back the mp3-dvd 's and all was fine: it plays files on the sd card as well as the dvd-files.
Have not tried a 32Gb sd-card yet..but do not expect any issues ,as its sdhc as well(except the bug that HiTach has found out).
