Hi guys! I recently bought a new to me 08 S550 with 58k. I have just the regular rear seats, and the three headrests are up. When I press the button on the center console I can hear a click like the relay engaging but that's it. Does that mean it wouldn't be a fuse? Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

 

My 07 did the exact same thing once, took to dealer and they "reset" the headrests (assume just a reboot of COMAND) but anyway, never have had another problem....

 

In mine when they're down and press the button they come up. Once they're up and press the button, they stay up, but I can hear a hiss. Is this a one-way thing (i.e. you can electronically bring them up, but only manually fold them down?)

When you had the dealer reset them do you have the dynamic seats or regular like mine? Thanks!

 

I've been thinking and wondering this for years, but why can't they ever make a Mercedes where the rear headrest come back up automatically after you put them down.

 

Thanks again guys I plugged it into the computer and cleared any garbage but still no go. I can hear the click of the relay it's really hard to hear. Could it be a fuse even tho the relay works? Maybe a fuse for the motor? Thanks !

 

Check mechanism (clear release lever, see links). If codes were checked/cleared with anything other than MB DAS you may need to revisit.

I have seen videos on youtube where people use the same button to raise and lower the rear headrest. Mine does not do this. When I press the button the headret sort of "drop" down. In the videos I have watched they slowly go down and then press the button again and they slowly come up.

Is there an option for this or can it be programmed??

 

would like to think this is possible given OP says his works in reverse and raises the headrests as opposed to normally dropping them. I would like to know too if the function can be coded to drop and raise the headrests. Would be a nice feature.

 

S class headrests have never done this. Since 1995 it's the same thing. You hit a button and then bang, they drop down. They've never raised back up which is crappy.

 

I don't see how that is because there are videos on YouTube showing this in the S550's. I'll find the videos I watched last night when I get back home.

 

The vehicles equipped with the rear seat package will raise and lower with the button. If rear head rests are down and a rear passenger gets in the seat and buckles the seat belt, the headrests will also raise automatically. On cars without the rear seat package, the headrests kind of just plop down when the button is pressed and there is a hissing sound like air releasing. Headrests can only be raised manually without rear seat package.

 

Thanks for the clarification Larry. I assume to retrofit this it would need motors to raise it? Maybe someone has done it.

 

I think it would require some type of motor to retrofit this feature because the raising and lowering with the rear seat package is slow and controlled and appears to be be motorized and without the rear seat package it seems to work by air.

Probably a very expensive retrofit if it can be done at all.

Look in your owners manual. There is a head rest reset procedure that can be performed with a tool that comes with the car. This is usually needed if the car was in an accident or the headrest was hit with some sort of force. I don't remember the specifics, but I do recall seeing it in the manual.

 

You're referring to front active head restraints, OP is questing rear.

 

I don't have the fuse diagram in the trunk can someone please let me know what fuse the rear headrest use? I'd really appreciate it.

 

“my buddy has a MB only shop” since you choose not to manually release the headrests as explained in links provided (post 7) have your buddy release them. There is not a dedicated fuse for rear headrests unless vehicle is equipped with electrically adjustable rear seats w/pre-safe function therefore, manually releasing them would be the starting point.

 

Well to be honest I just figured that was if they were a bother but I was more interested in fixing the problem. Would releasing them make it start working? Obviously that's not something you can tell me with certainy but I mean is it a possibility? There has to be a fuse for them somewhere I would think. Everything has to be fused. If it's not a fuse then what a motor? Thanks

 

Today I went out and popped off the cover and I don't see a release lever, is it on one particular head rest? I have looked at a couple. My mechanism doesn't seem to look just like the one in the picture and the document really doesn't say much, other than just a picture of the lever. Then on the other page it shows a screwdriver releasing something, is that something to release all of them? Any help would be appreciated! I am tired of seeing these things in my mirror lol!
