Smartkey & Keyless Go behavior questions

In the 2013 manual, I read that in order for the Keyless Go to work, the Start/Stop Button "must" be inserted.

Does the Start/Stop Button have active/passive circuitry? Or, does it simply extend into the key slot so that you can activate the button inside? It would be great if I can leave the Start/Stop Button out and still use Keyless Go.

Why? Example: On a hot day, I can hand my GF the Smartkey, she gets into the passenger side, and start the car.

I know having a remote starter will make the point moot, but I am just curious what is magical about that button.

Thanks.

She wouldn't be able to start the car from the passengers seat, you need to depress the brake pedal to start the car.

Which is why I wanted to know if I can leave out the button and still retain the Keyless Go feature. This way, she can put the key into the slot, turn and start the car from the passenger side. When I'm alone, I can still push to start (albeit without the button).

What exactly would you "push to start" if you remove the push to start button ?

And that is one of the elements I am trying to understand:

Does the Start/Stop Button have active/passive circuitry? Or, does it simply extend into the key slot so that you can activate the button inside? It would be great if I can leave the Start/Stop Button out and still use Keyless Go.
I do not have my S550 yet so I cannot see for myself. Is the button simply a cover that goes over the key slot? Does pushing the button in turn pushes the mechanism behind it? If true, can I directly push the mechanism behind it without the button, and will that work to start the car (presuming the brake is depressed)?

Without the start/stop button in the ignition slot the only way to start the car is to insert a smart key into the ignition slot.

But when using a smart key to start you do not need to depress the brake, i just tried this to be sure. Hope that helps.

Thanks Bill. To confirm my understanding, pushing on the key slot without the button will not start the car, even with the brake depressed? This, I presume, means that the button has some sort of passive circuitry in it so that when it is inserted, it enables Keyless Go?

I'm really not trying to

Correct, I tried that too. Bottom line is that my finger is not as smart as a smart key

The back of the start button is the same shape as the smart key.
