Black 4Matic with 100K. Being sold by a dealer at an auction. They wanted near to $30,000 but it didn't sell. Is that a reasonable price with those miles? Would it become a money pit?

Without figuring in options (which you didn't mention), it appears wholesale is around $25k with that mileage.

Love to get it for that but one with 203,000 miles sold for $22,250 so it won't go that low. Maybe in a month or two.

Hmmm, seems quite strange that a even a loaded W221 with 200k plus miles would sell for that much . however, I plugged in the following at KBB.com
  • a 2012 S350 loaded without Pano roof, 100k miles, and sold non-CPO into KBB and I got a range of $30000 - $37900

    a 2012 S350 loaded without Pano roof, 203k miles, and sold non-CPO into KBB and I got a range of $17900 - $25000

A lot of the higher mileage Mercedes are bought by exporters, often to the middle east, and I hear the mileage magically drops on the way over.

$25k-$28k retail sounds about right, presuming it's reasonably optioned out and with an AMG appearance package, but those miles are a real concern. I'd go as far back as a 2010 and spend that same money on an example with much lower mileage, and an aftermarket warranty. The '12 is tempting for the TTV8 but a '10 or '11 is otherwise the same car.

He's asking about the diesel S350. Wholesale without option packages is around $25k. Could go up to $28k if it's loaded up. I would imagine it could go $28-$32k retail. I'm not sure about the engine reliability, but I'm sure the rest of the car is subject to the same issues as any other 100k mile S class.

Assuming avg condition wholesale is 33-35k imo

The 203141 mile one was in really sad shape and still fetched 22250.

The sprinters with the same motor are starting to hit 300-400k miles and still run like new... so imo once out of warranty mileage is irrelevant as long as in decent condition and options.

Don't mean to upset any S350 Bluetec owners, but my only concern with the getting a diesel is the sludge/leaking problem I've read in the ML/GL forums. The V6 diesels have had seal failures leading to oil coolant leak. Another issue is sludge buildup in the turbo system causing the engine to seize or go in limp mode. I had a W116 S-Class diesel and it was great. Lots of torque and great gas mileage, lasted me past 270K miles. However, I feel like Mercedes has yet to produce a diesel that I can trust since the W126 300SD. Even the W140 diesel was problematic and known as a rod bender!!!

In my opinion, I would rather buy a high mileage GASOLINE version of the S-Class, model year 2009 and beyond, than a DIESEL version.
